Besides college-age students, mid-career professionals also come to this country for short-term programs to enhance their knowledge. Globalization also creates a diversity of academic staff and faculty in higher education institutions. Although international students and faculty bring diversity to the campus population and enrich the educational experience of all students, their diverse backgrounds and experiences pose many challenges to library services in academic libraries. Since its establishment as the nation’s first land-grant university in 1855, Michigan State University (MSU) has shared knowledge and its practical application with communities throughout the world. Today, international students at MSU comprise about 7.5 % of the total student population. In terms of international student enrollment, MSU currently ranks 20th nationally. Although participation in the globa...

Common vocabularies like VIAF, ISNI, LCSH, LCNAF, FAST, AAT, ULAN, GeoNames, etc. have been, at least, partially mapped to Wikidata. How can cultural heritage institutions leverage this foundation built by Wikidata to enhance the discovery experience of users? The subject knowledge cards available for all items in the Michigan State University Libraries digital repository utilize the URIs of subject terms in metadata records as an entry point to connect to rich linkages provided in Wikidata entries. The card captures contextual information of the subject in focus by pulling information from Wikidata and linked DBpedia. It also provides links to semantically related resources from the library catalog and selected scholarly databases...

What am I looking at: Contextualizing subject headings through linked open data
College & Undergraduate Libraries, 2020

These tools, which mostly rely on keyword indexing, do not easily bring together items on similar topics described under different thesauri. Michigan State University Libraries (MSUL) undertook an experimental project to enhance subject discovery through subject knowledge cards that utilize subject authority data and linked open data (LOD). Subject knowledge cards are currently deployed in the MSUL digital repository to improve the subject discovery experience by displaying contextual information on the subject, links to repository items on broader, narrower and related subjects, and links to external library resources on the same subject. This approach demonstrates a new way to enhance the subject discovery experience through LOD.

Since deriving MARC records by inserting appropriate MARC fields and pasting persistent URL from ProQuest database one at a time would be a very time-consuming process, an automated “batch-derive” process using XSLT was developed. This process selected and merged data
Enabling and integrating ETD repositories through linked data

Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents conceptual consideration of ideas behind linked data architecture to leverage ETD and attendant metadata to build a case for institutional assessment. Analysis of graph data support the considerations. Findings – The study reveals first and foremost that ETD metadata is in itself data. Concerns with creating URIs for data elements and general applicability of linked data model formation result. The analysis positively points up a rich environment of institutional relationships not readily found in traditional flat metadata records. Originality/value – This paper provides a new perspective in examining research landscape through ETDs produced by graduate students in higher education sector.

Issues of Personal Name Authority Control in a Retrospective Cataloging Project

The project's retrospective nature and concentration of authorship created challenges in coordination and execution of personal-name authority work. A decision-making flow chart was created to provide guidelines in searching variant usages and name authority records on

Due to an increasing volume of published materials and the explosion of online information resources during the Internet age, the library does not currently provide centralized access to its various information silos, nor does it provide a user-friendly search and retrieval experience for users whose expectations are shaped by Google and other major commercial Web sites. Searching across library resources is a complicated task, bearing high-attention "transaction costs" for the user, which discourage the use of library resources. Libraries need access systems that minimize complexity, easing discovery and delivery of resources for user populations. Here, the authors review past efforts of centralization of access, consider the potential of next-generation catalogues in the context of this historical tendency toward centralization of access, and describe what goals underlie that centralization.
Coping with the storm: Automating name authority record updates and bibliographic file maintenance

Design/methodology/approach – A proof-of-concept process to automate NAR updates and BFM in local catalog, using OCLC LCNAF SRU Service, MARCEdit, XSLT, and AutoIt, is built and subsequently tested using data from both test and production catalog servers at Michigan State University Libraries. Findings – The proof-of-concept process tested is proved to be successful in general though scalability and diacritics issues have to be addressed before it can become fully operational in a production environment. Originality/value – This process enables libraries, especially those without third-party authority control service, t...
Linked Open Data for Subject Discovery: Assessing the Alignment between Library of Congress Vocabularies and Wikidata

Recently, libraries have begun to experiment with LOD sources such as Wikidata and DBpedia to harness usercontributed resources and enhance information displayed in library discovery systems. The Michigan State University Libraries (MSUL) Digital Repository Team has embarked on a project to display contextual information from Wikidata and DBpedia in "knowledge cards" (informational pop-up windows) alongside subject headings with the goal of providing users with more information on items in the digital repository. This paper will briefly describe this project and outline a quality analysis initiative meant to evaluate linkages between Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH) and Wikidata as well as the results of this analysis. It will also address a number of challenges encountered in terms of mapping betwe...
