Information on the level of endemicity varies from place to place and is vital for control purposes. There is a paucity of such data for the Kiri reservoir and environs. A longitudinal study was undertaken in 7 communities surrounding the reservoir from 2018 to 2019 to assess the prevalence of urogenital schistosomiasis. A total of 688 urine samples were assayed for schistosome ova using the sedimentation technique. Out of these, 296 (43%) were positive for Schistosoma heamatobium ova. Males were significantly more infected than females (p<0.05). Infection was also significantly higher in younger than older individuals (p<0.05). There was a significant relationship between the prevalence of infection and distance from the reservoir, occupation as well as the level of education of individuals. With the observed level of ende...

This study reveals the need for a constitutional amendment to make local governments masters over their finances, exist and function as envisaged by the Constitution and be free from the manipulations of governments of states. This study recommends inter alia for an action challenging the extent of the powers of governors over the State Joint Local Government Account. The appendix consists of some important parts of the botched Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2016 which remains relevant till date.

The study examined the attitude of women to safer sex having in mind the risk of maternal mortality and morbidity. The data used for the study were collected through an interview schedule in which 250 female respondents were randomly interviewed from Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Using simple percentage and statistical methods it was observed that traditional method of birth delivery and skipping antinatal services does no good for pregnant women and also their ability to decide on their own to take their children and themselves to the hospital for medical attention. All this reduce maternal, mortality and morbidity, hence having an influence on reproductive health. It is observed that 73.2% of respondents who are married and that 59.7% of them can take their children for medication on their own without the influence of their husbands. One interesting aspect of the study is the influencing of modernization such as the dissemination of information on the importance of birth-spacing on reproductive health in the radio and television. Despite the campaigns, 57.7% had pregnancy complications. This shows a bad situation that a lot has to be done on policy making to have its impact on the population.
Some religio-cultural practices against the property rights of women and children in Nigeria and specified African countries

This inquiry sought the impediments to the realisation of the customary inheritance rights of African women and children and how to overcome them. Review of articles in journals, internet based materials consisting of reports of interviews of victims of inhuman customary practices, books, statutes and case law from some African countries was the analytical approach employed in this inquiry. Latest legislative and judicial attitudes were found to be intolerant of these practices but ignorance, poverty, etc. of victims is the setback. Sanctions on erring states members could secure compliance with charters/protocols that guarantee these rights; states and Human right groups’ interventions could provide the enlightenment and financial support needed by rural dwellers to assert their rights. This confusion sometimes is heightened when the issues intended to be canvassed at the appellate court are not solely customary or, if Islamic, not purely 'Islamic personal law'. This piece, employing the analytical method, has consulted and analysed statutes and judicial precedents and text books to put away the erroneous notion entertained by some jurists that the states' high courts, customary courts of appeal and sharia courts of appeal cannot be courts of coordinate jurisdiction 1 . It recommends, among other things, for the introduction of the topic of 'courts of coordinate jurisdictions' in the law curriculum as it will enhance unity of people of diverse religions and cultures through the practice of law.

It leads to a number of issues, ranges from equipment mal-function, which result to overheating of rotating machinery and random tripping of relays for protection of devices. Shunt active power filter (SAPF) has been the most popular choice to address harmonic disturbances in power system networks. For efficient compensation, SAPF greatly depends on fast and accurate detection of reference harmonic current. To generate the reference signals, modified synchronous reference frame (MSRF) technique is chosen. Low pass filter (LPF) has always been used to separate fundamental from harmonic components, and it provides adequate and reasonable results in harmonic mitigation. However, there is need for improvement due to presence of unwanted low order harmonics that cannot completely be eliminated by LPF. Meanwhile, generation of compensation current by SAPF is also depending on switching strategy. Sinusoidal PWM i...

Bifurcation lesions are encountered in approximately 21% of percutaneous coronary intervention procedures and are associated with an increased risk of major adverse cardiac events. The Medina classification has been developed in an attempt to standardise the terminology when describing bifurcation lesions. The focus of this article is on the management of the Medina 0,0,1 lesion (‘Medina 001’), an uncommon lesion encountered in <5% of all bifurcations. Technical considerations, management options and interventional techniques relating to the Medina 001 lesion are discussed. In addition, current published data supporting the various proposed interventional treatment strategies are examined in an attempt to delineate an evidence-based approach to this uncommon lesion.

The primary and secondary sources of data will be used to evaluate the evolution of ethnic militant groups to the rise of a more violent Boko Haram. Primary sources of data include written documents such as government publications, letters, correspondence documentaries, and newspapers. But largely, it depends on secondary sources of data such as books, journals, conference proceedings, and internet sources. It will also explore why internal terrorism occurs in Nigeria and the factors which facilitate it. Moreover, it will look into the Nigerian security environment and the counter-terrorism policies which the Nigerian government pursue to maintain national security from 1999 to 2015. The problem of internal terrorism and its implication for...

This work relies heavily on secondary sources of data; to examine the activities of youth violence in the country. Some of these youth gangs are the Yandaba in Kano state, Area boys in Lagos, Kauraye in Katsina, and of course the Niger Delta militants, the Mosob in the east and a host of others in some parts of the country. These are restive youths due to an unequal distribution of the socio-political and economic resources of the country. When socially excluded youths cannot depend on those institutions designed to protect them, violence becomes an instrument to achieve certain outcomes, such as justice, security and economic gains. When conventional methods of obtaining and working for increased social status, higher incomes and wider influence are...
EXTRA JUDICIAL ‘CONFESSIONS’ IN NIGERIAN CRIMINAL TRIALS: THE ACJA LEGAL REVOLUTION AND STATES’ ACJLs ULTRA VIRES PROVISIONS

The Police that beat ‘confessions’ out of their victims would also be the only available witness to testify whenever the voluntariness of such a statement is in issue. This work has taken an analysis of decided cases, relevant statutes and juristic works to come to the conclusion that the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) has not only rendered trials within trial not always necessary but has also alleviated the problems of defendants seeking to refute the voluntariness of their ‘confessions’ before courts. It is also the finding that states’ Administration of Criminal Justice Laws (ACJL) on confessions are not without constitutional (Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 hereinafter referred to as CFRN) hiccups. An amendment of the Evidence Act is recommended to cater for defendants in the states’ criminal ...

They would rather obey God than man 1 . In Geron Ali v. Emperor 2 , an Indian Muslim decapitated two persons and presented the heads to his religious instructor who asked for only one head. In Ashiruddin v. King 3 , the prisoner killed his son to secure a divine favour. Religious extremists will not have their religious teachings and practices ‘bow’ to any constitution. This paper, employs the analytical method, using journals, internet based materials, case law, historical records etc., to identify examine faith in the sharia law and the place of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (henceforth referred to as CFRN) in the hearts of Islamic faithful. It concludes by recommending inter alia that patriotism and nationalism be inculcated into the citizenry right from childhood in our private and public schools. Keywords: Islam, Co...

Hence, the need to study the occurrence, and diversity of freshwater snails in Kiri dam where there is paucity of such information becomes imperative. Accordingly, this study was carried out between December, 2016 and July, 2018. Snails were searched for in the five contact sites identified using long handle metal scoop nets in accordance with standard procedure. Snails recovered were examined for natural infections. Eleven (11) different fresh water snail species were encountered including Bulinus globosus, Bulinus truncatus, Biomphalaria pfeifferi, Lymnaea natalensis, Lanistes ovum, Lanistes varicus, Pila ovata, Melanoides maculata, Melanoides tuberculata, Bellamya unicolor and Gabiella tchadiensis of the eleven different snail species examined, only Bulinus globosus Bulinus truncatus and Biomphalaria pfeifferi shed schistosome cercariae. The other 8 species did not have any natural infections. The study revealed that Kiri Dam harbours diverse species of fresh water snails including those of public health importance. The presence of naturally infected snails indicates that the people engaging in various activities in the dam, are predisposed to infections harboured by these snails.
