A survey of international views on a first course in systems and control for engineering undergraduates

This paper summarises the results of an international survey of academics and industrialists on w... more This paper summarises the results of an international survey of academics and industrialists on what should be prioritised in the first, and often only, control course taken by engineering undergraduates. The results are made up both of quantitative data whereby respondents selected from a number of options, and also of qualitative data where respondents entered free comments. Reflections on the results and summaries of common trends are given to help readers consider how the curriculum in their own institutions might be updated and modified to meet modern requirements. At the time of writing the survey had around 500 respondents covering a good spread of nationalities, employment status and engineering disciplines.

We have been developing plants to be used in the classes for more than three decades. The thermo-opto-mechanical plant TOM1A represents one of the most successful products of this development. This paper presents ways of identification and control of a thermal channel of this plant. In our study programme on Automotive Mechatronics the thermo-opto-mechanical plants are firstly used in an introductory course on Automatic control to interact with basic problems of stability, performance and a plant identification.

This paper deals with the pole assignment controller design under consideration of the control si... more This paper deals with the pole assignment controller design under consideration of the control signal saturation. The controller synthesis developed for the double integrator plant is based on the decomposition of the 2nd order dynamics into two particular 1st order movements witch enables, together with the newly introduced geometrical interpretation of closed loop poles, an easy handling of saturation effects and yields a simlpe explicite controller fully respecting the given saturation limits. So, the specification of the closed loop poles can be made quite independently from the saturation effect, i.e. they only have to respect different parasitic effects like quantization and measurement noice, neclected dynamics, etc. It gives to the designer a new “degree of freedom” in comparing with the “linear” pole assignment controllers, where this choice has to take into account also the allowed control signal amplitudes.

There has been a rapid increase in the availability and power of both computing and internet resources which has an inevitable affect on both what content and how university education is delivered. This paper provides some context and discussion of a preliminary survey with a limited exposure; the intention is that feedback on this paper and the initial survey results will be used in planning for a more comprehensive survey of the entire IFAC community.

The paper discusses experience gained in flipping classes of Automatic Control Systems carried ou... more The paper discusses experience gained in flipping classes of Automatic Control Systems carried out in the 2nd and 3rd years of Bachelor study and in a leveling course to Master study of Automotive Mechatronics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. It points out similarities and differences appearing when comparing our experience with equivalent courses and activities reported abroad. These are mostly caused by the significantly different higher education framework in Slovakia. The importance of simulations and real time experiments, as well as student's motivation are accented and the corresponding technical arrangements are briefly described. At the end, the new approach evaluation by the students is briefly mentioned.

Filtered PIDA Controller for the Double Integrator Plus Dead Time

Abstract The paper proposes novel tuning of the proportional-integral-derivative-accelerative (PI... more Abstract The paper proposes novel tuning of the proportional-integral-derivative-accelerative (PIDA) controller with nth order series binomial filters for the double integrator-plus-dead-time (DIPDT) plant models. In the considered context, design of a suitable filter is not only an implementation problem. It is also critical in terms of the resulting performance, robustness and noise attenuation. The proposed integrated tuning procedure (ITP) for both the ideal PIDA controller + the implementation (noise attenuation) filter is analytical, based on the multiple real dominant pole method and application of the concept of an equivalent filter delay. It is shown to enable to scale the resulting performance in an unprecedented extent. Thereby, by using the two-parameter plant approximation, it still remains sufficiently simple for users.

Exploring PID tuning strategies considering noise impact in the IPDT plant control

This paper deals with one of the aspects influencing exploitation of the new opportunities provid... more This paper deals with one of the aspects influencing exploitation of the new opportunities provided by the development of the automated control technology base and resulting from the ability to work with relatively short sampling periods. It explores features of two integrated tuning procedures (ITP) for design of filtered series PID controllers of integral-plus-dead-time (IPDT) plants. Under ITP it means a joint design of both the PID controller and the nth order binomial low-pass filter parameters. Since the multiple real dominant pole method is able to yield closed loop performance scalable in a broad range, for an effective tuning of two filer parameters it is necessary to propose some rules helping in exploiting created options. For this purpose, shape related requirements put on the ideal input and output step responses are used. These performance measures are based on concept of piecewise monotonic signals. They represent additional constraints respected in designing as fast as possible transients. Deviations from the ideal shapes due to the noise and plant-model mismatch are quantified in terms of a modified total variation and used in different ways in the proposed ITPs. Possible tuning scenarios and superiority of the proposed approaches in comparison to the traditional PID controller design are demonstrated by simulation. Importance of the presented design for applications in different embedded controllers and programmable devices is stressed.

Disturbance observer control for AC speed servo with improved noise attenuation

The paper deals with a noise attenuation design of a modification of the disturbance observer (DO... more The paper deals with a noise attenuation design of a modification of the disturbance observer (DO) based PI control for an AC servo drive with the dominant first-order dynamics. The achieved results are compared with the traditional PI control. The DO based filtered PI (DO-FPI) controller consists of the P control with adjustable filter. It is augmented with an integral action based on load reconstruction using equally filtered plant dynamics inversion. The availability of broadly scalable filters requires a simple one-parameter based tuning. In looking for a possibly good noise attenuation, it allows changing the filter order and time constants by keeping nearly the same speed of disturbance responses as in the PI control. An application to the speed servo control with an incremental position sensor brings to light interesting properties of the compared solutions. The DO FPI and PI control give nearly equally robust solutions. However, in case of PI control it is at the expense of significantly increased torque ripple.

The user can set several control loop parameters (plant model parameters and their uncertainty, measurement noise, controller, filter parameters) and evaluate various performance measures. The comparison with traditional linear PID controller design methods can be made.

Background and Objective: Postoperative cardiocerebral and renal complications are a major threat... more Background and Objective: Postoperative cardiocerebral and renal complications are a major threat for patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This study was aimed to examine the effect of preoperative aspirin use on patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Methods: An observational cohort study was performed on consecutive patients (n = 1879) receiving cardiac surgery at this institution. The patients excluded from the study were those with preoperative anticoagulants, unknown aspirin use, or underwent emergent cardiac surgery. Outcome events included were 30-day mortality, renal failure, readmission and a composite outcome-major adverse cardiocerebral events (MACE) that include permanent or transient stroke, coma, perioperative myocardial infarction (MI), heart block and cardiac arrest. Results: Of all patients, 1145 patients met the inclusion criteria and were divided into two groups: those taking (n = 858) or not taking (n = 287) aspirin within 5 days preceding surgery. Patients with aspirin presented significantly more with history of hypertension, diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, previous MI, angina and older age. With propensity scores adjusted and multivariate logistic regression, however, this study showed that preoperative aspirin therapy (vs. no aspirin) significantly reduced the risk of MACE (8.4% vs. 12.5%, odds ratio [OR] 0.585, 95% CI 0.355-0.964, P = 0.035), postoperative renal failure (2.6% vs. 5.2%, OR 0.438, CI 0.203-0.945, P = 0.035) and dialysis required (0.8% vs. 3.1%, OR 0.230, CI 0.071-0.742, P = 0.014), but did not significantly reduce 30-day mortality (4.1% vs. 5.8%, OR 0.744, CI 0.376-1.472, P = 0.396) nor it increased readmissions in the patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Conclusions: Preoperative aspirin therapy is associated with a significant decrease in the risk of MACE and renal failure and did not increase readmissions in patients undergoing non-emergent cardiac surgery.
