HbbTV history and educational possibilities: Teaching options in times of the internet

As a consequence, HbbTV facilitates not only new forms of consumption, but provides us with new possibilities in education. Schools and other educational institutions like universities have started to explore the advantages of this new technology with regards to its ability to create more horizontal, creativity fostering dynamics. Within this chapter we demonstrate how HbbTV, as a convergence tool (Jenkins, 2008) provides useful results for students and professors when installed in the seminar room. We will exemplify our discussions with results from our mixed method research. Final results point out that the HbbTV transforms educational space into a multimedia environment with completely new possibilities and challenges for students and teachers. On the basis of our analysis and possible results we will give some r...

Social Networks as New Learning Ways in the University

Facebook and Twitter in Education: A New Factor to Improve Classes

The use of digital tools, social networks and social media improves education. However, it is relatively recent but active study object. In the Research Group about Digital Journalism and Broadband, in the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU, in Barcelona (Spain), we analyze, among other items, the use of social network in the classroom, taking advantage of the online activities. We analyze, in this paper, the theoretical framework of social networks. Links with education are evident. We develop a quantitative and qualitative methodology (triangulation). We choose a universe of college students used to include digital tools in the classroom (Moodle, online exercises, online exams, hypertext inclusion, streaming to document in the class). Then, we ask them for aspects of social networks (focused on Facebook and Twitter) in a quantitative way (using Likert scales) and in a qualitative perspective (in deep interviews). Statistically, we observe possible improvements in the class thanks to Facebook and Twitter. Relationship between professor and student, or even between student and student, is optimizable. We conclude the inclusion of social networks as a tool in the class time is positive.

This article aims to investigate to what extent university students make use of SNS and IM in relation with learning and university-related work. In order to do so, a survey was conducted among 115 university students. Results show that answering surveys posted by other students (for their university work), being part of groups created for doing university work or studying and sharing university-related links are some of the education-related activities that students most perform on Facebook. Alongside Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube and LinkedIn are the most popular SNS or IM applications when it comes to studying, doing and organizing university-related work. Some differences among male and female students can be inferred from the data though, although it was not the aim of this study to explore such differences and further research would be needed. The paper concludes th...

It allows aprioristic data about the ethics in the future journalists and mass media professionals. It also collaborates in the marketing strategies. In our study we analyze the impact of ethics and values in the students’ choice of Communication studies in the Spanish University. We analyze the impact degree of ethics and Christian values in the selection process. We observe a high influence of ethics (humanistic and holistic ethics in the training, religious orientation) as a factor considered to select the Communication studies.

Educational possibilities in the Internet-television intersection: the HbbTV standard

Th... more The standard HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast and Broadband TV) allows new possibilities for education. The phenomenon of assimilation and interaction between television and the Internet is growing. This is translating into a boost in hybrid and connected TV and the Internet penetration. Colleges and other educational levels could take advantage from this new standard. This communication analyzes the keys to this standard in the implication of the students and the professors. After the analysis of the developments of this innovative standard and its possibilities in the University framework, we establish a range of advantages and disadvantages for the most implicated human sources in the University: professors and students. The possibility to share and to use in synchronicity television and the Internet creates a new multimedia environment. As a project and trend (nowadays in a commercial perspective), this technology could improve teaching and learning in the University. Our prospective app...

How elders evaluate apps: A contribution to the study of smartphones and to the analysis of the usefulness and accessibility of ICTS for older adults
Mobile Media & Communication, 2015

However, elders and their interests with regard to ICTs have been largely ignored due to a presupposed missing ability to use, a general disinterest in, and a lack of will to learn about ICT developments. This article wants to contribute to the debate about elders and their abilities to use and interests in ICTs. We analysed how elders in focus groups in Spain use mobile ICT applications, how they experiment with them and why they decide to use or not to use them. In our research, we have used apps as an example for ICTs because apps are considered to be flagships for technological innovation, and because, in contrast to call and messenger functions of mobile phones, the motivation for using apps has to come from the individual that uses them. Findings from 4 focus group discussions with elders from Spain suggest that age does not directly influence th...

In this paper we analyze the formulas (references, visits, and media) that follow the pre-university students to get information, thanks to an empiric study in Catalonia.
