My background education is in the field of molecular plant virology, which then led me to work with virus diagnostics, the regulatory mechanisms of viral genes, and finally, with virus-host interactions. In this field I have focused mostly on RNA silencing and viral-encoded silencing suppression mechanisms. These fields of interest have lead me into astrobiology, and to the questions related to the origin of live, where I have done a long-standing work in education and in science popularization.

Suonenkatotauti (reversion disease of blackcurrant) on mustaherukan merkittävin virustauti kaikki... more Suonenkatotauti (reversion disease of blackcurrant) on mustaherukan merkittävin virustauti kaikkialla, missä mustaherukkaa viljellään. Tauti leviää herukan äkämäpunkin (Cecidophyopsis ribis) ja sairaan lisäysaineiston välityksellä. Tauti tunnettiin oireiden perusteella jo 1900-luvun alussa Hollannissa, mutta tutkimuksista huolimatta taudinaiheuttaja pysyi tuntemattomana, ja taudin tunnistaminen sairaista kasveista oli ongelmallista. Suonenkatotautisesta mustaherukasta eristettiin vuonna 1990 virus, ja molekyylitasoisen karakterisoinnin perusteella virus osoittautui uudeksi, nepo-ryhmään kuuluvaksi virukseksi. Määritetyn virussekvenssin perusteella virukselle kehitettiin PCR-menetelmään perustuva määritysmenetelmä, ja tämän menetelmän avulla havaittiin viruksen säännönmukaisesti liittyvän suonenkatotautiin. Takaisin-inokulaatio -kokeen avulla lopulta osoitettiin, että virus on suonenkatotaudin aiheuttaja, ja virus nimettiin mustaherukan suonenkatovirukseksi (Blackcurrant reversion virus, BRV). PCR-määritysmenetelmällä tehtyjen testausten perusteella on havaittu, että virus esiintyy yli puolessa satunnaisesti valituista kotipuutarhan mustaherukkanäytteistä; sen sijaan ammattiviljelmiltä satunnaisesti kerätyistä näytteistä virus havaittiin noin 5 %:ssa testattuja näytteitä.A PCR technique for detecting the causal agent of blackcurrant reversion disease Reversion is the most serious virus-like disease infecting blackcurrant crops world-wide. In nature the causal agent of the disease is transmitted by the blackcurrant gall mite (Cecidophyopsis ribis) and reverted planting material. The causal agent of reversion disease has remained uncharacter ised until now and the only available method to diagnose the disease has been graft inoculation. This paper reviews the isolation of a new nepo-type virus from reverted blackcurrant, the successful back-inoculation of the purified virus to healthy blackcurrant and the development of a sensitive detection method for blackcurrant reversion virus from Ribes tissue.vo

The effects of various growth hormones and their concentrations, different mediums and light cond... more The effects of various growth hormones and their concentrations, different mediums and light conditions on the regeneration and transformation process of Finnish black currant varieties have been investigated. Agrobacterium-mediated and particle bombardment transformation methods have been tested. The optimised regeneration and transformation conditions are being established. Using the developed methods, we aim to transform black currant with genes conferring resistance to reversion disease. We have transferred several different versions of the coat protein gene (translatable, untranslatable, antisense) of the black currant reversion virus (BRV) into Nicotiana benthamiana host, and currently we are testing their resistance effect on this host. Based on these results, the fragment(s) giving the most effective resistance effect(s) will be selected and transferred into the black currant host.

We have developed an immunocapture-reverse transcriptase-PCR (IC-RT-PCR) method to detect the virus, and have demonstrated that the virus is associated both with the E and R forms of reversion disease originating from Scandinavia, Scotland and New Zealand. Due to its origin and its consistent association with the different forms of reversion, but not with any other virus diseases of Rites tested, we refer to the virus as Blackcurrant reversion associated virus (BRAV).

The haze of the Milky Way was known. There are other nonstellar objects which were called nebular stars or nebulae—Ptolemy’s Almagest mentions seven of them. Until the riddle of nebulae was solved in the last century, there were many different kinds of objects under the nebula label. One did not know how far they were, nor was there any idea whether the nebulae were actually “foggy.” Galileo’s telescope revealed that the Milky Way was composed of a multitude of stars. Later, with bigger and better telescopes, many more new nebulae were found which appeared to be truly nebular. It was only in the 1920s when it was discovered that most of the nebulae are in fact distant huge stellar systems, similar to our Milky Way galaxy. They populate the new realm of deep space and participate in the majestic expansion of the Universe.

At this time and location, about 14 billion years after the enigmatic beginning of the universe, ... more At this time and location, about 14 billion years after the enigmatic beginning of the universe, in the outer parts of an average galaxy, in a planetary system formed 5 billion years ago around an ordinary star, we observe a special phenomenon: The surface of one of the planets is covered by a biosphere. It is a complex network of organic chemistry taking place in water solution. This chemistry is driven mostly by the energy streaming from the star, and it maintains a diversity of living beings, from unicellular microbes to large plants and animals. These form complex ecological communities, with long energy-transferring interactions (food chains), which effectively circulate carbon compounds between oxidized and reduced states. In particular, photosynthesis using sunlight by the green plants and algae converts the oxidized carbon, CO2, into reduced carbon compounds (sugars), which are used as chemical energy by other organisms. The photosynthesis binds large amounts of carbon into organic compounds (biomass), while animal respiration and decay of organic material again release CO2 into the air.
