IMPS - a case study in PSM and ontology use on the WWW

Increasingly diverse and useful information repositories are being made available over the World ... more Increasingly diverse and useful information repositories are being made available over the World Wide Web (Web). However, information retrieved from the Web is often of limited use for problem solving because it lacks task-relevance, structure and context. This research draws on software agency as a medium through which modeldriven knowledge engineering techniques can be applied to the Web. The IMPS (Internet-based Multi-agent Problem Solving) architecture described here involves software agents that can conduct structured on-line knowledge acquisition using distributed knowledge sources. Agent-generated domain ontologies are used to guide a flexible system of autonomous agents arranged in a server architecture. Generic problem solving methods developed within the expert system community supply structure and context.

There are structured and semi-structured sources of knowledge on the Web that present implicit or... more There are structured and semi-structured sources of knowledge on the Web that present implicit or explicit ontologies of domains. Knowledge level models have a role to play in structuring and extracting useful and focused problem solving knowledge from these Web sources. The IMPS (Internet-based Multi-agent Problem Solving) architecture described here is an agent-based architecture driven by knowledge level models. It is designed to facilitate the retrieval, restructuring, integration and formalization of problem solving knowledge from the Web. This research draws on models of agency particularly suited to supporting the functionality required of a system like IMPS.

The special problems of experimentally evaluating knowledge acquisition and knowledge engineering... more The special problems of experimentally evaluating knowledge acquisition and knowledge engineering tools, techniques and methods are outlined, and illustrated in detail with reference to two series of studies. The "rst is a series of experiments undertaken at Nottingham University under the aegis of the UK Alvey initiative and the ESPRIT project ACKnowledge. The second is the series of Sisyphus benchmark studies. A suggested programme of experimental evaluation is outlined which is informed by the problems with using Sisyphus for evaluation.
