Chemical repellents and other aversive strategies are the core of non-lethal wildlife management.... more Chemical repellents and other aversive strategies are the core of non-lethal wildlife management. These strategies typically depend on irritation (pain), conditioning, or fear for their effectiveness, and none is universally successful. Thus, conditioned food aversions deter browsing and foraging by deer ( virginianus , O.hemionus), but are less useful with predators, because killing, not consumption, is the behavior of interest. Broadly speaking, the utility of non-lethal strategies is affected by number and density of wildlife species, availability of alternative foods, palatability and novelty of treated items, and intensity of pain, sickness, or fear used to establish avoidance. Some of the most promising areas for successful predation management are those involving a combination of strategies tailored to a specific problem. For example, behavioral-contingent auditory and visual stimuli coupled with presentations of electric shock or momentary vibration (via telemetry collars) could provide an effective and unambiguous cue for withdrawal. Non-lethal methods, however, are rarely stand-alone technologies. More often, integrated strategies, involving both lethal and non-lethal methods, are required for effective predation management.

European groups stratify patients to more intense treatment by considering additional unfavorable factors, such as age, number of nodal sites, sedimentation rate, extranodal disease, and elements of the international prognostic score for advanced HL. We sought to determine the prognostic significance of these factors in patients with early stage disease treated at Stanford.

We investigated elemental mass fluxes associated with soil development in late Wisconsinan loess in Illinois and Minnesota, using Zr as a stable index element. Positive mass fluxes of Al, Fe, and Ti can most plausibly be explained by additions to these soils of fine far-traveled dust, with higher Al/Zr, Fe/Zr, and Ti/Zr ratios than the coarser locally derived loess. High-resolution particle-size analyses support this explanation. The proposed dust influx will complicate efforts to quantify weathering processes in these soils. Far-traveled dust influx could have occurred simultaneously with the final phase of local loess deposition, and/or later, in the Holocene. Depending on the timing of dust influx, many other soils of the region may have been affected by it.

The Brady Soil separates Bignell Loess from last glacial Peoria Loess and thick sections, which can reach 6 m thickness, may contain four buried soils beneath the modern surface soil. The Brady Soil has A/B/C horizonation, including a thick dark A and a blocky or prismatic structured B horizon. The Brady soil is intensely burrowed, probably by nymphs of cicada species, which require woody vegetation. Secondary carbonate is present in all genetic horizons and was emplaced post burial. The Holocene soils are dominated by A horizon characteristics, namely dark colors, but blocky or prismatic structured B horizons occur in several sections. Secondary carbonate is present in most, but not all Holocene soils. Three phases of loess deposition and soil formation are evident from the thick proximal stratigraphic sections presented here. Initial rates of Bignell Loess deposition were low relative to the rate of soil formation, producing a basal aggraded A horizon above the Brady Soil, that is capped by a increment of loess with minimal pedogenic features. The middle portion of the Bignell Loess is finer textured and contains multiple dark buried soils. The final increment of loess is coarser and contains the weakly expressed modern surface soil. Climatically, termination of Brady Soil formation marks a shift to drier Holocene climates with a decrease in woody species, episodes of new loess deposition and soil formation, and secondary carbonate accumulation.

Direct entrainment of silt, on the other hand, is thought to generate minimal quantities of dust. If so, loess landscapes should rarely be major sources of dust unless disturbed by human activity. To test the mechanisms by which loess can be eroded by the wind, we used the Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Lab (PI-SWERL). PI-SWERL tests were conducted on benches that were carved into loess at field locations. Coarse to fine loess was also collected and tested in a controlled setting using (1) dry, unconsolidated loess and (2) crusted loess. Results indicate that in most cases, the threshold friction velocity for silt is less than that for sand and that most dust generation occurs by direct entrainment of dust. Saltation, even in coarse loess, was nonexistent to intermittent. In a few cases, saltation of sand or soil aggregates preceded dust generation or enhanced emissions after direct entrainment began. Emission fluxes of loess are potentially high in both proximal and distal settings, suggesting that loess is easily entrainable if vegetation density is low. We hypothesize that an arid and windy climate of the late Pleistocene, paired with lower vegetation density, facilitated large-scale erosion of Peoria Loess in Nebraska to generate wind-aligned ridges and troughs. More broadly, our results indicate that loess landscapes have the potential to be major sources as well as sinks of dust.
