This paper focuses on the landscape quality of open spaces highlighting the peculiarities of Akure, a city in South-western Nigeria as it evaluates the significance of landscaped areas to the built environment in an urban setting. The poor quality of the city’s urban environment has been attributed partly to inadequate use and management of these urban open spaces and this has exerted a major strain on the physical outlook of the environment and an attendant negative effect on the welfare and productivity of the residents. The need to effectively address the issue of a sustainable built environment calls for the identification and analyses of the open spaces in a bid to assess their implications to landscape planning and the status of the city’s development. The continued survival of any indigenous style is the ability to accommodate changes in components while preserving the culture of the people. The postmodern and contemporary architectural styles are the most recent defined patterns that have been assimilated into the Yoruba areas of Southwest Nigeria. Existing literature on Yoruba architecture have not addressed the delineation of the current threshold of the indigenous style. In a bid to address this problem, this research set out to define the current outlook of the Yoruba indigenous architecture through the forms and elements that have been acculturised from the foreign styles. This was achieved by locating the study in a historic city centre where the social culture is preserved in the community and the buildings. Urban upgrades carried out in the area stimulated the renovation and fresh construction of buildings where they occurred in the otherwise sedentary community. The older buildings in the sedentary parts of the study area and the newer structures in the upgraded areas provided two different thresholds in the architectural evolution for comparison of the constituents of the building patterns. After defining the study area, building counts were

The essence of building design process and management for building sustainability in the creation... more The essence of building design process and management for building sustainability in the creation and maintenance of a qualitative architectural product is investigated in this paper. The design process, concept of building sustainability and particularly the quality of the built environment are discussed. Akure, a state capital in Nigeria was used as a case study. The principles and indicators for sustainability of buildings and its implications on the quality of the environment are examined in details. Survey findings include the views of the professionals on the clients, perception on the design process as well as management of projects, and the implications on the quality of the ensuring products and the city's environment. The data were factor analyzed using varimax rotation criterion (with Kaiser Normalization). The results revealed that five factors were effective, with one of them exhibiting the greatest variability and individual differences. The variables that loaded on this factor were really the aspects of the process and management relating to the clients. The findings also revealed the professionals' wrong attitude towards design process as shown with a very high degree of variability in the study. The paper concludes by recommending the enactment and enforcement of relevant policies with adequate education of the people and the involvement of all the stakeholders in the management of building projects and environmental programmes for the realization of a qualitative architectural product.

This study investigated the influence of GI on sense of community amongst residents in selected neighborhoods in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 1,560 residents who participated in a questionnaire survey conducted in the study area. The results of the descriptive statistics and categorical regression analysis reveal that although the residents rated the existing stock of GI to be of poor quality, they perceived GI as having a positive influence on the development and sustenance of sense of community in the neighborhoods. The rate of loss of green areas, access to recreational parks, and proximity of green areas to the residents emerged as the top three aspects of GI with the most significant influence on sense of community in the residents. This implies that to enhance the contribution of GI in promoting sense of community in urban residents, these aspects of GI should be given adequate attention in Nigeria and other developing countries.

Thus, sustainable housing and environmental development is conceptualized as a building or shelter provided through judicious, selective sourcing, processing and use of building materials to satisfy current shelter needs while ensuring quality environment and adequate resources for the future generations in satisfying theirs. To stimulate orderly academic debate, the paper proposes five major factors of sustainability. They include climatic sustainability factor, ecological sustainability factor, economics and affordability sustainability factor, social sustainability factor and cultural sustainability factor. The sustainability attributes of each factor are highlighted, and the criteria for the selection of building materials to satisfy the attributes are commended.

The state governments and big private stakeholders determine the key narratives for the urban upgrades. Loss of patrimonial stock of indigenous buildings and communal cohesion in these enclaves after upgrading often lead to a complete loss of the socio-cultural heritage. The promotion of urban tourism, which is ideal for cities with heritage values, is thus made more challenging for these cities. This study examines the sensitive nature of upgrade programmes as it affects historic city centres. A review of instances in the area is concluded with a case study of the Abeokuta city core. The study was carried out using literature about upgrades in Southwest Nigeria and field studies that involved interviews and questionnaires in Abeokuta city core. The research discovered that while residents are aware of the programmes, they ha...

These challenges limit the potential of the cities, making them unsatisfactory and inefficient as well as plunging some towards collapse. This paper explores a review of academic outputs on different challenges of urbanization bedeviling cities in Nigeria and identifies a porous cities management system that allows a wide gap of in-balance between numerous urban dynamics. Undesirable effects and negative outcomes such as urban disharmony, reduction in the quality of the urban environment and urban life, and limitations to the potential of the cities in meeting needs are pointed out. The perspective of achieving sustainable city development in Nigeria in terms of improving the quality of the urban environments came to the fore by recommending a smart city approach for managing city developments.

This often happens because the necessary attention to the development of such fragile touristic sites are absent thus exposing them to stages of deterioration. This paper is a review of theoretical issues related to the development and sustainability of the cultural landscape. Through the review of literatures, previous models such as, General System Theory (Cuervo, 1967), Cultural landscape Management framework (2006), Diamond Model for sustainable tourism (2017), and The Ethical tourism model (2008), a conceptual framework for the sustainability of the cultural landscape was developed. The study, however, provides useful information for the development and conservation of a cultural landscape through a framework that can inform policy makers in the tourism industry.

However, the aspects of GI with the most significant positive influence on human health, especially in densely populated cities in sub-Saharan Africa have not been adequately investigated. This study relied on household survey involving 1560 residents to explore the influence of GI on residents' self-perceived health benefits in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria. The data were analysed using descriptive and multiple regression analyses. The findings revealed that around 42% of the respondents had visited green spaces more than any other type of GI, and that this had positive influence on their perceived physical, mental and psychological health and wellbeing. Access to parks; availability of well-equipped green spaces; condition, adequacy and proximity of green areas to residents' emerged as the key aspects with the most significant influence on their perceived health benefits of GI in the neighbourhoods. This study concludes that for urban population to derive maximum health benefits from GI, more attention should be given to issues of accessibility, quantity, quality and location in the provision and management of GI in urban neighbourhoods in Nigeria and beyond.

This, according to various researchers, has exerted a major strain on the physical outlook of the environment and a negative effect on the welfare and productivity of the residents. This has called for the need to identify and analyze the open spaces in the urban environment and assess the implications of their landscape planning on the status of the city and the development of a healthy and sustainable environment. This study therefore discusses the concept of sustainability, particularly within the built environment. It looks into the principles and indicators for sustainability of the environment and the resulting problems. Furthermore, a case study of Akure urban core was carried out to assess the uses and landscape status of the open spaces. The results when statistically analysed showed the inadequacies in the provision and management of the open spaces in the study area. It therefore recommends attainable policies for the effective sustainability of the environment.
