An environmental survey was conducted in order to assess the frequency of detection of picobirnav... more An environmental survey was conducted in order to assess the frequency of detection of picobirnavirus (PBV), human adenovirus (HAdV) and infective enterovirus (iEV) as indicators of faecal contamination in freshwater, and to determine their potential as reporters of the presence of other enteric viruses, such as group A rotavirus (RVA). The study was carried out over a three-year period (2013-2015) in the San Roque Dam, Córdoba, Argentina. The overall frequency detection was 62.9% for PBV, 64.2% for HAdV and 70.4% for iEV. No significant differences were observed in the rates of detection for any of these viruses through the years studied, and a seasonal pattern was not present. Whenever there was RVA detection in the samples analyzed, there was also detection of iEV and/or HAdV and/or PBV. At least one of the viral groups analyzed was demonstrated in the 100% of the samples with faecal coliforms values within the guideline limits. In this setting, especially in those samples which reveal faecal indicator bacteria within the guideline limit, we propose to carry out a pathway, involving PBV, HAdV and iEV detection in order to enhance the evaluation of microbiological quality in freshwater in Argentina. The proposed methodological strategy could report faecal contamination in water, mainly of human origin, and the condition of the matrix to maintain viral viability. In addition, the viral groups selected could report the presence of RV.

We analysed normal tissues, samples with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSILs) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs). We correlated the presence of HHV-6 and HHV-7 with the finding of human papillomavirus (HPV) in mucosal samples.MethodsCervical samples were examined and grouped as follows: group 1 (n=29), normal cytology; group 2 (n=61), samples with LSIL; group 3 (n=35), samples with HSIL. Searching variables to assess recreational water quality: the presence of infectious human enterovirus and its correlation with the main variables of water pollution by multivariate statistical approach in Córdoba, Argentina

Surface waters are used by local populations for different purposes, such as recreational activit... more Surface waters are used by local populations for different purposes, such as recreational activities, water source for human and animal consumption, and irrigation among others, which lead to the need for management strategies on water health and associated risks. During this study, we investigated physicochemical parameters, fecal coliform bacteria, and infectious human enterovirus detection to determine the water quality in different beaches (categorized as an urban area, non-urban areas, and an intermediate position) from San Roque Dam, in Argentina. Multivariate techniques were applied. Principal component analysis allowed identification of subgroup of variables responsible for the water quality. A cluster analysis and multivariate analysis of variance showed the urban beach as the highest pollution area. The following variables (measured at the urban beach) would be enough to describe the quality of the aquatic body: nitrites, fecal coliforms, total phosphorous, and infectious human enterovirus. The infectious human enterovirus was an independent variable detected in 69.1% of the samples showing a steady frequency of detection during the whole period studied and could identify human fecal contaminations as a source of water pollution. The selected variables would contribute to water quality regarding the risk for human health using San Roque dam waters for recreational propose.

En las últimas décadas, además del desempleo, la precarización de la inserción laboral y la baja ... more En las últimas décadas, además del desempleo, la precarización de la inserción laboral y la baja de salarios, se ha focalizado la presencia de los otros como los responsables de la crisis y de un polo negativo de la ciudadanía. En este marco, el inmigrante aparece como una amenaza, un apropiador ilegítimo de los pocos recursos sociales disponibles. Este trabajo permite estudiar la construcción del otro como inferior y estigmatizable y hacer un análisis desde las teorías sociales del aprendizaje. La investigación fue de corte cualitativo y correspondió a un relato biográfico sin secuencia completa mediante el uso de la muestra a juicio. En el análisis del relato de la estudiante Wanca, puede observarse la construcción de estereotipos culturales de corte racista en el espacio universitario y cómo los usos de esta diversidad permiten atribuir determinadas situaciones a capacidades. También es posible observar que la estigmatización de los inmigrantes, anticipa y permite analizar los modos de exclusión de otros grupos sociales, ya sea por su pobreza, por su falta de educación o por su edad.

The measured variables (11) reflected an important deterioration in the river water quality when passing through the city, which was observed by a continuous increase of chloride, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, nitrite, nitrate, total ammonia, orthophosphate and total and thermotolerant coliforms. By cluster analysis, the total monitoring points (eleven) grouped in four clusters, reflected similarity in water quality between monitoring river sites. This notion allows the introduction of reliable criteria to choose a single sampling site that represents the cluster. Rotavirus and norovirus were detected in 100% and 83.9% of monitoring points respectively, and their detection did not necessarily correlate with bacterial and physicochemical variables. The aim of this paper was to assess the prevalence of antibodies to HHV-6 in the general populati... more The aim of this paper was to assess the prevalence of antibodies to HHV-6 in the general population and study the virus circulation among individuals with cancer, in order to analyze HHV-6 involvement in lymphoproliferative disorders. A total of 200 sera from the general population and 67 from patients with neoplasia were studied. The latter were divided in 3 groups: lymphoma/myeloma, leukemia and non-immune solid tumors. HHV-6 antibodies (IgG and IgM) were assayed by IFA and viral genomes were detected using nested PCR. The prevalence of the infection in the healthy population was 63.5% with a titer geometric mean (TGM) of 48.67 +/- 1.23. A control group was obtained by systematic sampling of the healthy population. Among the patients with neoplasia, the prevalence was 95.5%. In the lymphoma/myeloma group, TGM was 268.73 +/- 1.62; in the leukemia group it was 151.1 +/- 1.88 and in the non-immunogenic solid tumors group it was 95.67 +/- 1.57. Three of 2854 (0.10%) stools were positive for reovirus but negative for adenovirus, astrovirus and rotavirus.
