The platform contains a functions generator, a multichannel oscilloscope, and a spectrum analyser... more The platform contains a functions generator, a multichannel oscilloscope, and a spectrum analyser. A preparatory virtual laboratory is available to the students in addition to the traditional one so that they are encouraged not just to follow the theory but to try some practical exercises. In this way practical sessions in laboratories developed during the academic year can be supplemented by electronic instrumentation. Besides this the student can carry out, both for on-site and blended activities, a wide range of practices about tests and measurements in electronic circuits. The three virtual instruments have been developed and set up in a LabVIEW environment. This way the students just need a PC, a data acquisition card, and a breadboard so that electronic circuits can be subjected to tests and measurements.

Usually, modelling of fuel cell systems uses complex expressions, based on the knowledge of physi... more Usually, modelling of fuel cell systems uses complex expressions, based on the knowledge of physicalchemical phenomena. These models require a good knowledge of the parameters involved in the processes that, in many cases, are difficult to determine. A solution to avoid this difficulty consists in using black-box models, such as those based on artificial neural networks (ANN). This paper presents the modelling of a PEM fuel cell system, using ANNs. The selected ANN structure has been validated for the transient state, during the start up of the system, and in steady state. Results are shown for a commercial PEM fuel cell system.

It is possible to obtain high efficiencies in the combined generation of electrical and thermal e... more It is possible to obtain high efficiencies in the combined generation of electrical and thermal energy using micro-turbines. To study their operation within electrical networks, connected or isolated from the distribution network, it is necessary to use models that faithfully simulate their operation. This work studies the standalone operation of the micro-turbine and makes modifications to the model developed by "Lasseter". Thus, a new model is proposed that integrates the acceleration control, improving the accuracy in transient operation. Finally, validation of the proposed modifications is carried out by comparison with actual performance data of a Capstone C30 micro turbine. The simulations performed in this study show that including the acceleration control leads to major disturbances in the DC voltage, which has to be taken into account when designing the chopper of the converter.

Long distances in the vicinities of railways are not exploited in terms of wind energy. This pape... more Long distances in the vicinities of railways are not exploited in terms of wind energy. This paper presents a scalable power electronics approach, aimed to harness the wind potential in a railway infrastructure. The key aspect of this proposal relies on both using the wind energy in the location, and the displaced air mass during the movement of a train along the railway, in order to produce electrical energy. Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) are used in order to take advantage of the wind power, and widely used and well-known power converter techniques to accomplish the goal, showing MPPT techniques, parallelization of converters and power delivery with a Solid State Transformer (SST). Results are shown according simulations of the whole system, with and without train activity, resulting that 30.6 MWh of the energy could be generated without the train, and the energy generated with the assistance of the train could reach 32.3 MWh a year.
