This chapter includes the detailed description of the research design, data collection process, and data analysis method. The Likert scale survey, developed by the research team, was administered online to approximately 100 elementary teachers in South Korea to examine their perspectives of teaching KLLs mathematics based on the five domains of the established framework. Combined with the survey data, we included a case study of two elementary school teachers from the same school, which entailed video recordings of classroom observations, lesson plans, and semi-structured interviews. For this book, we explored one elementary school and two classrooms within this school in great detail. The quantitative data drawn from the survey was analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the qualitative data was analyzed through analytic memos and emerging themes. In sum, the results of the case studies were compared to the results of the survey to help us analyze how teacher perspectives of teaching KLLs mathematics are related to their implementation of culturally responsive teaching strategies.

This will be achieved by producing thematic books that capture knowledge and practices on mathematics education in Asia from both the insider and outsider perspectives. The series helps to establish a much needed Asian perspective to mathematics education research in the international landscape. Over the last decade or so, several international comparative studies have shed light on systems of schooling that were otherwise not very much sought after. Several educational systems in Asia, in particular East Asia have consistently produced stellar outcomes for mathematics in both TIMSS and PISA despite the fact that both studies measure achievement in mathematics in distinct ways that are very much orthogonal to each other, while other Asian systems have not been able to replicate the same level of success. Though one may occasionally chance upon a publication on some aspect of mathematics education in Asia, there appears to be in general a dearth of publications on mathematics education in Asian countries from the perspectives of scholars from Asia. Hence it is apparent that there is a gap in the availability of knowledge on mathematics education from the region in the international space. This series has a wide scope with emphasis on relevancy and timeliness. It encompasses the general trends in educational research such as theory, practice and policy. Books in the series are thematic and focus both on macro and micro topics. An example of a themed book on a macro topic could be one on "School mathematic curricula-An Asian perspective" while a themed book on a micro topic could be one on "The pedagogy of 'simultaneous equations' in Asian classrooms".

Particularly, we frame this study within a modified Culturally Responsive Mathematics Teaching tool, which was developed as a teacher self-analysis tool by Aguirre and del Rosario Zavala (Pedagogies Int J 8:163–190, 2013). This chapter also describes the conceptual framework in detail with specific examples.

Ethnically diverse students as well as Korea-born students returning from long residences in foreign countries have great difficulties orienting themselves within Korean schools due to lack of Korean language proficiency and cultural differences. We named this student group as Korean language learners (KLLs) and investigated teacher perspectives on effective mathematics pedagogy for KLLs. Using two educational models for English language learners (ELLs)—Cummins’ Quadrant Model and the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model—we examined survey results of a small group of elementary teachers in South Korea in terms of effectiveness and feasibility of the ELL models.

So, the transition from arithmetical thinking to algebraic thinking is an important success factor for algebra learning. Therefore, in this study, 64 sixth graders solved the problems of near generalization and far generalization concerning the generalization of some figure patterns. Subsequently we analyzed their problem solving. As a result of the analysis, several cases of students having difficulties in performing algebraic generalization were identified. Through the discussion of the research results, several pedagogical implications were drawn to support the transition from arithmetical thinking to algebraic thinking in elementary school students.

For the selection, a mathematical problem from <算術管見> of Joseon dynasty, '圓容 三方互求', was selected, considering the participants' experiences of problem solving and the variety of approaches to the problem. For the application, teaching strategies such as individual problem solving and sharing of the solving methods were used. The problem was provided for 13 mathematically gifted elementary students. They not only solved it individually but also shared their approaches by presentations. Their solving and sharing processes were observed and their results were analyzed. Based on this, some didactical considerations were suggested.

It is likely that they apt to avoid manipulating general triangles except the right triangles and the isosceles triangles etc. Our investigation says that the progress of triangle-related contents in Chosun mathematics can fall into three stages: measurement of the triangle-shaped fields, transition from the object of measurement to the object of geometrical study, and examination of definition, properties and validation influenced by western mathematics.
