Farnsworth first demonstrated a television system, his amazing invention remains in some respects exactly as he left it. Though television has received wide spread distribution around the world and the quality of the picture has steadily improved, it remains for the most part a passive display system for broadcasting images into the home. Even telephone technology has experienced more evolutionary development than television, with individualized, interactive services such as voice mail, call waiting, conference calling and others. Television is about to undergo a revolutionary transformation, with the introduction of the Time Warner Cable’s Full Service Network (FSN), the world’s first digital, interactive television network.

It defines the parameters of importance that govern the performance of a paging system as well as the measurements needed to monitor the behavior of programs. It also discusses the tool implemented to make these measurements available, namely, Washington Interpretive Paging System (WIPS). WIPS is divided into three main modules: the CPU, the memory manager, and the CAL Interpreter. A possible option in the use of WIPS is the recording on tape of all memory references as well as the type of operation, instruction or data fetch, which caused that reference. The chapter further presents the results of the experiments on different versions of users' programs and presents the way simple changes in a program can yield interesting improvements in its behavior while running under a paging system.

Its interprocess communications mechanisms provide a structuring tool similar to monitors, capabilities, and abstract data types. This paper describes the principal concepts implemented in the operating system kernel, and presents the essential system processes. Support for application design techniques is discussed and related to proven software engineering principles, including information hiding and modularity. Specific examples are drawn from System 75 for call processing and maintenance.

Thoth is a real-time operating system which is designed to be portable over a large set of machin... more Thoth is a real-time operating system which is designed to be portable over a large set of machines. It is currently running on two minicomputers with quite different architectures. Both the system and application programs which use it are written in a high-level language. Because the system is implemented by the same software on different hardware, it has the same interface to user programs. Hence, application programs which use Thoth are highly portable. Thoth encourages structuring programs as networks of communicating processes by providing efficient interprocess communication primitives.
