Single-aliquot, non-bronchoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage in the diagnosis of metastatic mammary tumours in dogs

To evaluate the use of bronchoalveolar lavage as an auxiliary tool for the diagnosis of neoplasti... more To evaluate the use of bronchoalveolar lavage as an auxiliary tool for the diagnosis of neoplastic lung metastasis from mammary tumours in dogs. METHODS : A single-institution prospective observational study including 20 healthy dogs and 30 with mammary tumours. Thoracic radiography and single-aliquot, non-bronchoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage with cytology interpretation was performed in all animals and the results compared between groups. RESULTS : Dogs with mammary gland tumours and radiographic evidence of pulmonary metastasis had significantly higher relative neutrophil counts in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid than dogs with tumours without evidence of metastasis. In only one dog, in which thoracic radiographs were normal, were malignant cells identified in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE : Inflammatory bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in dogs with mammary gland tumours may suggest metastatic disease. Bronchoalveolar lavage does not appear to be sensitive for identifying malignant cells.

The diagnosis involves the use of different methods or combination of image exams, including excretory urography, pneumocystography, ultrasonography, cystoscopy and computed tomography. The technics for surgical repair should be considered evaluating the number and functionality of the EU, the location of the ureteral opening, functional condition of ipsilateral kidney and the presence of other abnormalities. Characterization of Doppler spectrum of hepatic veins in dogs with pulmonary hypertension

Hypothesis/Objectives: To assess the normal pattern of hepatic venous flow using spectral Doppler ultrasound examination; to correlate this information with structural and functional variables of the right ventricle (RV), and to analyze the impact of age, sex, body weight quartiles, heart rate, cardiac rhythm, and systolic arterial pressure on the results in healthy dogs. Animals: Sixty-five healthy dogs. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study. The direction and maximum velocity of each of the 4 possible components of venous flow were determined from pulsed-wave Doppler examination of the hepatic veins. In addition, structural and functional parameters (TAPSE, longitudinal strain, FAC%, S 0 , E t /A t, and E 0 t / A 0 t ) of the RV were evaluated. Results: The same phase patterns for different waves were seen in all animals: A and V were retrograde waves, and S and D were anterograde waves. The velocity of the spectral waves increased with body weight (P < .05) and could be correlated with functional indices of the RV. A significant difference was found when comparing morphometric indices with body weight quartiles (P < .05). In addition, intra-and inter-observer assessments showed low variability. The mean duration of the examinations was 5.2 minutes. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Hepatic spectral Doppler findings can be correlated with systolic and diastolic indices of the RV and vary with body weight.

A 17-year-old male Poodle was examined with the chief complaint of ocular and nasal chronic disch... more A 17-year-old male Poodle was examined with the chief complaint of ocular and nasal chronic discharge. During physical examination conjunctival and episcleral congestion were noted besides the ocular and nasal mucus-purulent discharge. The oral examination revealed dental calculus, gengivitis and periodontal disease, mainly located at the superior canine teeth, with purulent secretion accumulation at the palatine aspect. After computed tomography examination an oro-nasal communication in the superior canine teeth region and osteomielitis in the maxillary bone was diagnosed. Periodontal treatment was performed and a total remission of the ophthalmic, nasal and dental signs was observed. Knowledge of skull anatomy and the inter-relation among the different anatomical structures is fundamental to achieve a correct diagnosis and treatment of the clinical facial signs with origins in the teeth. This type of report is curiously uncommon in the veterinary literature. This work aims to alert veterinarians about the interdisciplinary knowledge between different specialties.

Calcinose circunscrita no coxim plantar de um cão: Relato de caso

A calcinose circunscrita ocorre devido a deposição de sais de cálcio nos tecidos, e pode ser clas... more A calcinose circunscrita ocorre devido a deposição de sais de cálcio nos tecidos, e pode ser classificada de quatro formas de acordo com a patogênese, sendo elas: metastática, distrófica, idiopática e iatrogênica. Na forma metastática, a mineralização geralmente está associada a hipercalcemia e hiperfosfatemia, distúrbios vistos em pacientes com nefropatia crônica. A calcinose distrófica ocorre pela deposição de cálcio em locais onde houve um dano tecidual; porém, os valores séricos de cálcio e fósforo encontram-se normais. A calcinose iatrogênica também ocorre em um local no qual houve dano tecidual, podendo ser causado por tratamento ou procedimento cirúrgico prévio, e dessa forma também pode ser classificada como calcificação distrófica. E por último, a calcinose idiopática, ocorre quando os fatores causais acima citados não são detectados. A calcinose distrófica e a idiopática, ocorrem mais frequentemente em animais, em comparação a calcinose metastática. A lesão é comumente encontrada em raças grandes e cães jovens, abaixo de dois anos. O paciente descrito aqui não tinha evidências de doenças préexistentes ou traumas, o que poderia levar à calcificação distrófica, e não havia sinais de doença metabólica, o que poderia levar à calcificação metastática, dessa forma, o presente estudo relata um caso de calcinose circunscrita idiopática no coxim plantar de um cão.

Although advanced imaging techniques are already available in veterinary medicine, radiographic and ultrasonographic exams remain the basic diagnostic tools in veterinary oncology. This review describes some considerations to improve clinical approach to animals with neoplastic lesions based on the use of radiographic and ultrasonographic exams. The role of these modalities in screening, diagnosis, staging, treatment choice, and follow-up of cancers is discussed. Additionally, a workflow for some type of tumors is described, such as mediastinal lymphoma in cats, as well as mast cell tumors and osteosarcoma in dogs. Situations that require other techniques are also discussed.
