Fernando Lopes
Fernando Lopes was born in Abrantes (Portugal) on September 18th, 1963. He received the M.Sc. degree in Computer Science and the Ph.D. degree in Artificial Intelligence from the Technical University of Lisbon (IST), Portugal. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Liverpool, UK, where he carried out research in agent-based computing, notably agent-mediated negotiation, in collaboration with Prof. Michael Wooldridge.Currently, Fernando Lopes is a researcher at the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG), Lisbon, Portugal. His main research interests include software engineering aspects of autonomous agents, negotiation in multi-agent systems, liberalized energy markets, and renewable energy integration. The research work is interdisciplinary in nature and involves methods and techniques from artificial intelligence, game-theory, economics, and energy and power systems.Fernando Lopes is an editorial board member of the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence (CESER Publications). He acts as an editor of several international conference and workshop proceedings (e.g., the MASGES workshop of the PAAMS conference). He acts as a program committee member of various international conferences (e.g., the International Conference of the British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence). He has been the editor of a scientific journal special issue.Fernando Lopes is the editor and main author of a book about electricity markets with increasing levels of renewable generation, published by Springer, in 2018. He is also the editor of a book about negotiation and argumentation in multi-agent systems, published by Bentham Science, in 2014.Fernando Lopes submits on a regular basis articles to scientific journals. He also participates on a regular basis in international conferences as a paper author. He has about 100 publications, among which 4 have been honoured with academic distinctions. He is a member of the Portuguese Engineering Association and the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence. Fernando Lopes regularly advises graduate students. He has taught several courses at the first, second and postgraduate levels. He has considerable experience of system development, notably multi-agent systems, database systems, and expert systems. He has developed an agent-based simulation tool for energy markets, called MATREM (for Multi-Agent TRading in Electricity Markets).
