The theme of the event was “Big Data Analytics for Decision-Making” and it was organized by the EURO (Association of European Operational Research Societies) working group of Decision Support Systems (EWG-DSS). The eight papers presented in this book were selected out of 26 submissions after being carefully reviewed by at least three internationally known experts from the ICDSST 2015 Program Committee and external invited reviewers. The selected papers are representative of current and relevant research activities in the area of decision support systems, such as decision analysis for enterprise systems and non-hierarchical networks, integrated solutions for decision support and knowledge management in distributed environments, decision support system evaluations and analysis through social networks, and decision support system applications in real-world environments. The volume is completed by an additional invited paper on big data decision-making use cases

COST mission is to enable breakthrough scientific and technological developments leading to new c... more COST mission is to enable breakthrough scientific and technological developments leading to new concepts and products. COST has been supporting the networking of research activities across all 35 Member Countries and beyond for over 40 years. In H2020 COST will continue to follow the basic principles that made it a success since its foundation: excellence, openness, inclusiveness and bottom up. In 2013, the COST member states established a new implementing structure, the COST Association that will allow an even more efficient and research friendly management. Currently there is a scientific reorganization on going and a new submission, evaluation & selection procedure is being discussed. COST will reinforce its policies in the H2020 context allowing contributing to the Innovation Union's goal.

Collaborative Decision-Making and Decision Support Systems for enhancing Operations Management in Industry Environments

This is particularly evident in the operations management field. In order to support such a decision-making revolution, the nature of inter-organisational collaboration is changing and requires a higher degree of tactical and strategic co-ordination as well as the design and implementation of new decision-support tools and information sharing schemas with network partners. Therefore, the study of collaborative decision-making trends and solutions and their contribution to improved operations and business performance is presented as a theme of contemporary interest and for both practitioners and academics. It is a pleasure for the EURO Working Group on Decision Support Systems (EWG-DSS) to introduce this special issue of the Production Planning &amp; Control Journal on ‘Collaborative Decision-Making and Decision Support Systems for enhancing Operations Management in Industrial Environments’. This special issue has focused on bringing together a range of papers that address and implement collaborative solutions for supporting the design of production systems. The papers finally accepted and published in this special issue have been subject to a rigorous peer review process, based on initial editor screening and anonymous refereeing by four independent highly-qualified expert referees. Hence, we would like to thank all the authors and reviewers for their efforts and for their valuable feedback within this process. Six papers from a total of twenty-six submissions have finally made it through the two-stage review process. Each of these papers has not only employed a thorough methodological approach but has also attempted to address real industry problems, solutions and challenges. The final set of papers provides a knowledge confluence for research into decision support systems, collaborative solutions and operations management in a variety of industrial environments. Firstly, we were very pleased to receive the manuscript ‘A knowledge chain management framework to support integrated decisions in global supply chains’ from Shaofeng Liu, Jonathan Moizer, Phil Megicks, Dulekha Kasturiratne and Uchitha Jayawickrama. The authors have proposed a global knowledge chain management framework that identifies and prioritises critical knowledge that global supply chain environments can consider for supporting their integrated decisions. From their results of their study, manufacturing industries can understand and visualise better how to support integrated decisions under a global supply chain perspective. Also from a global decision-making perspective, the next contribution is made by Andrés Boza, M.M.E. Alemany, F. Alarcón, Llanos Cuenca entitled ‘A model-driven DSS architecture for delivery management in collaborative supply chains with lack of homogeneity in products’. In this paper, a model-driven decision support system has been conceived to support the process of re-allocating available inventory in collaborative supply chains. The main implications of using and implementing the developed collaborative solution are demonstrated in an application in the ceramics industry. The third contribution ‘Supporting the collaborative decision-making process in an automotive supply chain with a multi-agent system’ is by Jorge E. Hernández, Andrew C. Lyons, Josefa Mula, Raul Poler and Hossam Ismail. Linked to the a novel combination of collaboration, supply chain design, operations management and decision support systems, this paper presents a generic collaborative solution, implemented in the automotive industry, which supports multi-level decision-making processes in multi-level supply chain environments from a tactical point of view within a negotiation process. Based on a multi-agent system implementation, it demonstrates that profit and service level for every supply chain node, and the supply chain as a whole, can be improved by re-engineering the supply chain to support a collaborative decision-making design. In line with the previous papers, the fourth contribution, from Julien Maheut, Juan Manuel Besga, Jone Uribetxeberria and Jose P. Garcia-Sabater, deals with the operational perspective of the collaborative decision-making process in supply chain networks and is entitled ‘A Decision Support System for modeling and implementing the Supply Network Configuration and Operations Scheduling problem in the machine tool industry’. The key thrust of this paper concerns a simulation-based decision support system to simultaneously solve a supply network configuration problem and an operations scheduling problem for the machine tool industry. Moreover, by evaluating different operations management indicators, a case study based on a company that assembles highly customized machines and tools in several European plants is considered. While organizations have to get ready to cope with high technology standards to face competition in the current era of decision making, heavily driven by large-scale data, there is a clear need to enforce the importance of Decision Support Systems to exploit the potentiality of Collaborative Decision Processes and Analysis. Decision processes include an organizational and a cognitive dimension. Businesses need to be reactive in order to stay abreast with the fast-changing technology evolution lead to constant adaptations in those organizational and cognitive processes. While the organizational processes evolve and tend towards having more actors involved in the decision making, the responsibilities and the processes tend to be more distributed. On the other hand, the necessity to report and inform stakeholders about the decision processes is an increasingly strong requirement. These collaboration aspects invite us not only to review the classical model of decision making, but to redesign the decision support which focuses on essential elements like: the plethora of multiple information, the added value needed by the processes of innovation and design, and finally the importance of the decision & Fátima Dargam

The selected papers are representative of the current research activities in the area of decision support systems, focusing on topics such as decision analysis for enterprise systems and non-hierarchical networks, integrated solutions for decision support and knowledge management in distributed environments, decision support system evaluation and analysis through social networks, and e-learning and its application to real environments.

This paper describes some of the work carried out within the Horizon 2020 project MIDES (MIcrobia... more This paper describes some of the work carried out within the Horizon 2020 project MIDES (MIcrobial DESalination for low energy drinking water), which is developing the world's largest demonstration of a low-energy sys-tem to produce safe drinking water. The work in focus concerns the support for operational decisions on desalination plants, specifically applied to a mi-crobial-powered approach for water treatment and desalination, starting from the stages of process modelling, process simulation, optimization and lab-validation, through the stages of plant monitoring and automated control. The work is based on the application of the environment IPSEpro for the stage of process modelling and simulation; and on the system DataBridge for auto-mated control, which employs techniques of Machine Learning.

Recently, the EWG-DSS Collab-Net has advanced in its development and an online platform was deplo... more Recently, the EWG-DSS Collab-Net has advanced in its development and an online platform was deployed linking the collaboration data of the EWG-DSS members, through their publication relationships. Initially, this platform will collect data from the Google Scholar publication database. The Collab-Net platform aims to investigate these publication relationships in an automatic way, allowing researchers to analyze their own collaborative network. Moreover, also allows possibilities for future collaboration among EWG-DSS members only using a Web-based platform, anywhere at any time. Another relevant feature of the Collab-Net system is to enable two kinds of end-users profiles (administrator and member) with their specific access permission in the system.
