In order to obtain indirect measurements of turbulent fluxes, meteorological data measured at the Col de Porte laboratory (1320 m a.s.l, France) under very stable conditions (cold, clear night with low wind) are used. The radiative fluxes are measured, the conduction within the snowpack is calculated using the snow modelCrocusand the turbulent fluxes are determined as a residual term of the surface-energy balance equation. These data were used to fit a new parameterization of the turbulent fluxes for the snow model. The turbulent fluxes are increased as compared to the theory.Crocuswas also applied to the data from the LEADEX92 experiment and the turbulent fluxes calculated by the model were compared to the fluxes measured using sonic anemometers/thermometers on the site.

This fully distributed catchment model is used in an operationnal real-time mode since 2005 for producing mid-range ensemble streamflow forecasts based on the 51-member 10-day ECMWF EPS. New improvements have been recently implemented in this forecasting chain. First, the new version of the forecasting chain includes new atmopheric products from the ECWMF (EPS at the resolution of 0,25° over France). Then an improvement of the physics of the ISBA model (a new physical representation of the soil hydraulic conductivity) is now used. And finally, a past discharges assimilation system has been implemented in order to improve the initial states of the ensemble streamflow forecasts. We introduce a new approach to take into account the memory architecture and the memory mapping i... more We introduce a new approach to take into account the memory architecture and the memory mapping in behavioral synthesis. We formalize the memory mapping as a set of constraints for the synthesis, and defined a Memory Constraint Graph and an accessibility criterion to be used in the scheduling step. We present a new strategy for implementing signals (ageing vectors). We formalize the maturing process and explain how it may generate memory conflicts over several iterations of the algorithm. The final Compatibility Graph indicates the set of valid mappings for every signal. Several experiments are performed with our HLS tool GAUT. Our scheduling algorithm exhibits a relatively low complexity that permits to tackle complex designs in a reasonable time.

Ripple Down Rules is a practical methodology to build knowledgebased systems, which has proved su... more Ripple Down Rules is a practical methodology to build knowledgebased systems, which has proved successful in a wide range of commercial applications. However, little work has been done on its theoretical foundations. In this paper, we formalise the key features of the method. We present the process of building a correct knowledge base as a discovery scenario involving a user, an expert, and a system. The user provides data for classification. The expert helps the system to build its knowledge base incrementally, using the output of the latter in response to the last datum provided by the user. In case the system's output is not satisfactory, the expert guides the system to improve its future performance while not affecting its ability to properly classify past data. We examine under which conditions the sequence of knowledge bases constructed by the system eventually converges to a knowledge base that faithfully represents the target classification function. Our results are in accordance with the observed behaviour of real-life systems.

Patients with sepsis frequently have activated coagulation pathways triggered by tissue factor, r... more Patients with sepsis frequently have activated coagulation pathways triggered by tissue factor, reduced levels of anticoagulation factors, reduced fibrinolysis, activated endothelial surfaces, and activated platelets. These processes result in disseminated intravascular coagulation and microthrombus formation and contribute to multi-organ system failure. S aureus surface proteins and exotoxins can contribute to thrombus formation through effects on the coagulation pathway and on anticoagulation factors. In addition, S aureus can activate endothelial surfaces and platelets. Some exotoxins such as the Panton-Valentine leukocidin can cause leukocyte lysis and additional injury to endothelial surfaces. These events can cause microthrombosis and deep venous thrombosis. Several case series have described an association between acute hematogenous osteomyelitis secondary to S aureus and the development of deep venous thrombosis in extremities. In addition, a recent clinical case review of staphylococcal community-acquired pneumonia demonstrated that patients who died secondary to these infections frequently had deep venous thrombosis. These observations support the idea that S aureus can contribute to thrombus formation. We recently cared for a patient who developed splanchnic vein thrombosis during an episode of staphylococcal cellulitis associated with bacteremia and multi-organ system failure. The pathogenesis of splenic vein thrombosis differs from the pathogenesis of deep venous thrombosis in the extremities in some, but not all, respects. Clearly the presence of circulating staphylococci and associated proteins could contribute to the formation of thrombi in the splanchnic circulation. Patients with hypervirulent staphylococcal infections require evaluation for deep venous thrombosis in extremities and in unusual sites. The development of these clots has a potentially significant impact on management and outcome. This review considers the pathogenesis of deep vein thrombosis in patients with sepsis, the potential contributions of Staphylococcus aureus in this process, and clot formation in unusual locations which greatly increases the complexity of patient care.

On ordinal VC-dimension and some notions of complexity

We generalize the classical notion of Vapnik-Chernovenkis (VC) dimension to ordinal VC-dimension,... more We generalize the classical notion of Vapnik-Chernovenkis (VC) dimension to ordinal VC-dimension, in the context of logical learning paradigms. Logical learning paradigms encompass the numerical learning paradigms commonly studied in Inductive Inference. A logical learning paradigm is defined as a set W of structures over some vocabulary, and a set D of first-order formulas that represent data. The sets of models of in W, where varies over D, generate a natural topology W over W. We show that if D is closed under boolean operators, then the notion of ordinal VC-dimension offers a perfect characterization for the problem of predicting the truth of the members of D in a member of W, with an ordinal bound on the number of mistakes. This shows that the notion of VC-dimension has a natural interpretation in Inductive Inference, when cast into a logical setting. We also study the relationships between predictive complexity, selective complexity-a variation on predictive complexity-and mind change complexity. The assumptions that D is closed under boolean operators and that W is compact often play a crucial role to establish connections between these concepts. We then consider a computable setting with effective versions of the complexity measures, and show that the equivalence between ordinal VC-dimension and predictive complexity fails. More precisely, we prove that the effective ordinal VC-dimension of a paradigm can be defined when all other effective notions of complexity are undefined. On a better note, when W is compact, all effective notions of complexity are defined, though they are not related as in the noncomputable version of the framework.

ABSTRACT Early exploration of communication architectures and timing behaviors is a key step in m... more ABSTRACT Early exploration of communication architectures and timing behaviors is a key step in modern system design flows. This paper proposes a framework for the design space exploration of DSP applications. The proposed approach is based on four main abstraction levels: algorithmic, architectural (communication interface), behavioral (I/O timing diagram) and RTL. The system specification is based on a set of Behavioral Description Models (BDM) which communicate through channels: each BDM represents a hardware component. For this purpose, a BDM (1) embeds a sequential function—that describes the computing algorithm to be implemented—into a module and (2) includes a set of I/O and control processes. Communication architectures and timing behaviors (I/O scheduling, I/O parallelism...) of each BDM can be modified and easily explored by adding I/O and control code into the dedicated concurrent processes. This allows keeping the description of the functionality unchanged throughout the refinement steps. The high-level synthesis tool GAUT is next used to generate, from the unmodified sequential function, the RTL architectures that respect the constraints i.e. the refined I/O timing behavior. The use of BDMs for the system description allows the designer to simulate and to evaluate several communication architectures and several timing behaviors during the performance analysis phase. The interest of our approach is shown through the case study of a Hyper-plane Intersection and Selection HIS algorithm for MC-CDMA system.
