More specifically, the software will enable users to perform a situation analysis of a company, determine best markets for a company’s products/services and develop an international business plan online. Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching and learning method widely used at universities and businesses around the world. The three software - the Global Market Potential System Online (www.globalmarketpotential.com), the Global Marketing Management System Online (GMMSO, www.gmmso2.com) and the Export Import Management System Online (EIMSO), www.eimso.com) - are web-based PBL tools designed to be used for international business projects. PurposeThe paper examines the impact of export activity on productivity and how this effect is mo... more PurposeThe paper examines the impact of export activity on productivity and how this effect is moderated by R&D investment and foreign ownership.Design/methodology/approachA time-lag effect is taken into account when examining the proposed model. Data are collected from the Annual Industrial Survey of the National Bureau of Statistics of China. A dataset containing 117,340 firms across the sample period (2001–2007) are used to test the hypotheses.FindingsThe results indicate that while R&D investment plays a significant role in strengthening the positive effect of export activity on a firm's productivity, foreign ownership surprisingly has a negative moderating role.Originality/valueScholarly interest in the links between export activity and productivity is on the rise. The purpose of this paper is to review studies on knowledge management and associated paradoxes in Africa and a paradox-conscious African knowledge management model. Discussions of strategic change generally assume that managers strive to break free from the cons... more Discussions of strategic change generally assume that managers strive to break free from the constraints of their organization's past so that they can forge ahead into the future. However, some organizations instead opt to reinterpret and reenact abandoned strategies drawn from their own history. Such actions are largely unaccounted for in the literature on strategic change. Accordingly, we propose here a conceptualization of a distinct type of strategic change that we call “strategy restoration.” We first outline how strategy restoration fills a gap in current understandings of strategic change. We then elaborate conditions that motivate and enable organizations to pursue strategy restoration rather than other types of strategic change. Two components of the framework—organizational traditionality and memory—characterize the organization itself, and two—nostalgia and perceptions of the organization's authenticity—characterize the market in which the organization operates. The challenge most business instructors and practitioners face is to determine how to bring the real world of business into a classroom or training environment. Experts claim that the answer lies in the Project-Based Learning (PBL) method and web based interactive software widely used at universities and businesses around the world. The findings indicate that the GMPSO enhanced the students’ understanding of international business and improved their team working, research and critical thinking skills.

This paper examines the relationship between barriers to export and firm performance, as well as ... more This paper examines the relationship between barriers to export and firm performance, as well as the indirect impact of export support programs on firm performance. Four major constructs of export barriers and export support functions are discussed. A structural equation model using the barriers and the export support functions as exogenous variables, and export performance as endogenous variable, show that the most important barrier in impacting export performance is the lack of firm competence, followed by fear of not receiving payment from foreign customers, procedural barriers, and lack of government support. Analyses also show that firm size impacts the perception of barriers to export and export performance. Furthermore, the export support activities construct has an indirect impact on export performance.

A comparison of international HRM practices by Indian and European MNEs: evidence from Africa

By comparing the HRM practices in Indian and European MNE subsidiaries located in four of the Sou... more By comparing the HRM practices in Indian and European MNE subsidiaries located in four of the Southern African Development Community countries, this paper tests the relevance of the country of origin effect and analyses the strength of institutional and firm level influences. Examining data from 865 MNE subsidiaries obtained from the World Bank enterprise survey data, the paper finds that Indian MNEs have higher labour costs in relation to total sales than their European counterparts, that Indian MNEs make more use of temporary labour than their European counterparts, that Indian MNEs invest in less training than their European counterparts. No support is found for the hypothesis that Indian MNEs have a lower ratio of skilled workers in comparison to European-owned subsidiaries. The study shows that country of origin effects are weakened if they are not consistent with host country ideology and that as economies evolve so too do their expectations of HR policy and practices.
