In this work, we present a study on adaptation in a mobile museum guide, investigating the relati... more In this work, we present a study on adaptation in a mobile museum guide, investigating the relationships between personality traits, and the attitudes towards some basic dimensions of adaptivity. Each participant was exposed to two simulated systems-one adaptive, the other not-on each of the dimensions investigated. The study showed that the personality traits relating to the notion of control (conscientiousness, neuroticism/emotional stability, Locus of Control) have a selective effect on the acceptance of the adaptivity dimensions.

In this work, we present a study about adaptation on a mobile museum guide aiming at investigatin... more In this work, we present a study about adaptation on a mobile museum guide aiming at investigating the relationships between personality traits and the attitudes toward some basic dimensions of adaptivity. Each participant was exposed to two simulated systems that realized an adaptive and a non-adaptive version, respectively, on each of the dimensions investigated. The study showed interesting effects of Big Five personality traits on acceptance of the adaptivity dimensions; in particular conscientiousness, creativity and stability. Locus of control seemed to have a limited yet quite selective effect on delegating to the system the choice of follow-ups.

Acceptance of adaptive museum guides raises important issues stemming from both the nature of the... more Acceptance of adaptive museum guides raises important issues stemming from both the nature of the scenario (museum visit) and the very kind of technological approach adopted (adaptivity). As to the former, museum guides play a utilitarian role in a hedonic scenario; at present, however, it is not clear how this reflects on the balance between intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for guide acceptance. The adaptive nature of the guide, in turn, raises questions about the impact of the opaqueness of the system behavior, of the alleged loss of perceived control over the interaction, and the role of presentation personalization. All these issues are explored in this paper by means of a model derived from TAM and comprising both extrinsic and intrinsic motivational constructs. The results of a analysis of data from 115 subjects show that the motivational structure of the guide usage is mainly utilitarian, with intrinsic motivations playing a role insofar as they acquire an instrumental value. The impact of the control issues on acceptability is low and indirect, while the importance of the feedback provided by the system is confirmed. Finally, personalization positively impacts on user engagement, this way strengthening the empirical and theoretical groundings for work in adaptive systems.

Each participant was exposed to three simulated tour reports that realized a sequential adaptive, a thematic adaptive and a non-adaptive version, respectively, and subsequently on each of the dimensions investigated. Results were unexpected. The possible reasons are discussed and conditions under which personalized report generators can be preferred over non personalized ones are proposed.

In this era of overabundant information and content, people increasingly rely on recommender syst... more In this era of overabundant information and content, people increasingly rely on recommender systems to identify those information items that best meet their needs and interests. Movie recommender systems, like the one used by Netflix, attempt to predict which films a given person will enjoy watching. While these systems help single individuals making decisions, they provide limited support for groups of people. This work explores how to create recommender systems for groups that can combine multiple user profiles and predict which movies a group of users will collectively enjoy the most. We built a prototype using Netflix REST API based on the results of a formative study of the watching habits of 60 actual Netflix users and examined their views of how a group recommendation system would fit in with their current habits. We conducted a preliminary evaluation with a focus group which validated our approach to group recommendations, revealing that this type of system could facilitate social interactions by sparking discussion about movies, directors, and actors among viewers. This prototype provides a valuable platform for further exploring group decision making in this context.

A Framework for Designing Collaborative Tasks in a Web-Environment

We present a framework that considers both the collaboration activities as well as the tools invo... more We present a framework that considers both the collaboration activities as well as the tools involved combining the artifact and process oriented approaches of knowledge engineering. Following the framework stages, we designed an Asynchronous Learning Network with a collaborative environment that enables structured collaboration between group members. Hundred and fifty (150) university students divided into teams of ten members each performed two collaborative tasks within a university course. As a preliminary evaluation we classified the messages sent by students within the discussion forum. Feedback on uploads increased significantly in the second assignment indicating that students besides performing their own task also took part in other group's tasks creating a cooperative group that produced a collaborative outcome. We discuss the suitability of the framework for the design of Collaborative Environments for knowledge sharing and raise a few topics for further research.

Student's Evaluation of Web-Based Learning Technologies in a Human-Computer Interaction Course

Inspired by the design studio commonly used in architecture education, this project will explore ... more Inspired by the design studio commonly used in architecture education, this project will explore a "studio-based" approach to teaching an undergraduate course on human-computer interaction design. In addition to a weekly lecture, the course will revolve around a weekly, 150-minute "design studio" that emphasizes conceptual user interface design activities. Using wireless HP tablet PCs, pairs of students will interact with custom, sketch-based software to construct low fidelity design prototypes that meet the requirements of given design problems. Each design problem will (a) focus on the development of an interface to a specific electronic device (e.g., a VCR) or software system and (b) require students to apply the design processes and principles currently being explored in class. Via a wireless network, student pairs will hand in their design prototypes to the instructor. In "design crits" held at the end of each studio, select pairs of students will use the instructor's presentation equipment to present their designs to the rest of the studio for feedback and discussion. In addition, via the wireless network, students will post their designs to a web-based environment that supports artifact-centered threaded discussions, so that students can view and comment upon each other's designs outside of class.

The conceptual model defines three elements: an Adaptive User Model (including components for building and updating the user model), a Task Model (including general and domain-specific knowledge) and an Adaptive Discourse Model (assisted by an intelligent help and a learning module). Design and Evaluation of a Visitor Guide in an Active Museum

In such scenario, where there is an overload of information to be delivered in a relatively short time, technology may play a crucial role in supporting museum visitors and enhancing the overall visit experience. Content preparation and delivery must be organised in a way that will provide relevant information to the visitors and at the same time allow them to get the level of details and perspectives they are specifically interested in. The user interface should be intuitive and guarantee focus on the exhibit. Personalization can play a key role in providing relevant information to museum visitors. Moreover, since visitors tend to visit the museum in small groups, supporting the group and not only the individual is another aspect where technology may contribute, whether by during-the-visit communication or post-visit group interaction. The project applied recent research results and infrastructure of the PEACH project at the Hecht Museum at the University of Haifa, and extended them with further results, and in particular has provided the first elements of a an attention shift in the direction of small groups of visitors. Evaluation with users substantiated several aspects of the design and in some cases yielded unexpected results.
