The addition of conductive additives during electrode fabrication is standard practice to mitigat... more The addition of conductive additives during electrode fabrication is standard practice to mitigate a low intrinsic electronic conductivity of most cathode materials used in Li-ion batteries.To ensure an optimal conduction pathway, these conductive additives, which generally consist of carbon particles, need to be in good contact with the active compounds. Herein, we demonstrate how a combination of pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) relaxometry and inverse Laplace transform (ILT) can be used to study such contact. The investigated system consists of PTMA (poly(2,2,6,6–tetramethylpiperidinyloxy–4–ylmethacrylate)) monomer radicals, which is a commonly used redox unit in organic radical batteries (ORB), mixed at different ratios with Super P carbon black (CB) as the conductive additive. FabPOD: An Open Design-to-Fabrication System

Digital workflows from the design to the production of buildings have received significant recent... more Digital workflows from the design to the production of buildings have received significant recent attention in architectural research. The need for both integrated systems for design collaboration (Boeykens and Neuckermans, 2006) and clear and flexible communication flows for nonstandard fabrication outcomes have been identified as fundamental (Scheurer, 2010). This paper reports on the development of a digital "design system" for the design and prototyping of an acoustic enclosure for meetings in a large open work environment, the FabPod. The aim was to keep this system open for temporal flexibility in as many aspects of the finalisation of the design as possible. The system provides novel examples of both integrated collaboration and clear communication flow. (1) Acoustics is included as a design driver in early stages through the connection of digital simulation tools with design models. (2) Bi-directional information flows and clear modularisation of workflow underpins the system from design through to fabrication and assembly of the enclosure. Following the completion and evaluation of the FabPod prototype, the openness of the system will be tested through its application in subsequent design and prototyping iterations. Design development will respond to performance testing through user engagement methods and acoustic measurement.

The Materials Systems team in the Designing the Dynamic workshop developed a novel method for sen... more The Materials Systems team in the Designing the Dynamic workshop developed a novel method for sensing, simulating and representing material responses to external stimuli. The approach of embedding capacitive sensors into material models was developed to improve material performance-based design, and could be generalised to other design explorations. The method was applied during the workshop to verify the potential for sensing and visualising material properties as a contribution to design iteration and to establish a material awareness early on in the design process. The outcome is a method for anticipating material behaviour early in the design process using measured data.

Digital workflows spanning from the design to the production of buildings and small installations... more Digital workflows spanning from the design to the production of buildings and small installations have received significant recent attention in architectural research [1]. The structuring of these workflows is important for facilitating design collaboration. The successful delivery of 'non-standard' projects, with free-form geometries and novel fabrication material can be particularly dependent on such workflow. This paper reports on the workflow developed for the FabPod, an acoustic enclosure for meetings which could be located in an open knowledge work environment. For this project, a broad 'design system' was developed covering the project workflow from early stage design to completion of a fabricated prototype. This was implemented in order to defer design decisions, providing improved opportunities for testing detailed material and fabrication aspects of the project. It also facilitated collaboration between experts in different aspects of parametric workflow and in 'tuning' acoustic performance. A by-product of this approach is the possibility of using the system as the basis of further iterations and to consider the possibilities of developing the prototype into a product. A deferral of design decisions is a key strategy for mass-customisation. The system displays a number of characteristics and capabilities required for mass-customisation suggesting that a resulting product might hold value in its ability to be customised. In this paper we firstly evaluate the design system in its role for designing and fabricating the research prototype. We then consider the workflow in relation to key capabilities for mass-customisation.

This paper reports on the challenges associated with modelling, simulating, fabricating and measuring this phenomenon using both physical and digital models at three distinct scales. The results suggest hyperboloid geometry, while difficult to fabricate, facilitates sound scattering.

The development of new building materials has decisively influenced the progression of architectu... more The development of new building materials has decisively influenced the progression of architecture through the link between built form and available material systems. The new generation of engineered materials are no exception. However, to fully utilise these materials in the design process, there is a need for designers to understand how these new materials perform. In this paper we propose a method for sensing and representing the response of materials to external stimuli, at the early design stage, to help the designer establish a material awareness. We present a novel approach for embedding capacitive sensors into material models in order to improve material performance of designs. The method was applied and tested during two workshops, both discussed in this paper. The outcome is a method for anticipating engineered material behaviour.

In this paper the impact that modules used in visual scripts have on the architectural design process is investigated with regard to legibility, collaboration, reuse and design modification. Through a series of thinking-aloud interviews, and through the collaborative design and construction of the parametric Dermoid pavilion, modules are found to impact the culture of collaborative design in architecture through relatively minor alterations to how architects organise visual scripts.

Electronic properties of Ca doped LaFeO3: A first-principles study

Acceptor doping of oxides generally results in the formation of charge-compensating oxygen vacanc... more Acceptor doping of oxides generally results in the formation of charge-compensating oxygen vacancies, leading to enhanced ionic conductivity. Ca-doped LaFeO 3 is one such example which has been considered for use in cathode materials of solid oxide fuel cells. In the present work, we determine the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of individual intrinsic and extrinsic point defects and defect clusters in Ca-doped LaFeO 3. We find that the concentration of oxygen vacancies can increase through the formation of dopant-vacancy clusters. Oxygen vacancy concentration will influence the diffusivity of oxygen which in La-based perovskites is shown to be governed by the oxygen vacancy concentration. We also calculate the interaction between dopant ion and oxygen vacancies and find that oxygen vacancies will not be trapped by the dopant species as found in other oxide materials. These findings suggest an enhanced conductivity of oxygen in LaFeO 3 under Ca doping.
