The source is under commissioning at LPSC since 2016. One of the main upgrades of the V3 concerns the new microwave injection system including two WR62 waveguide apertures. This new plug having two waveguide ports allows running the ECRIS with the double frequency heating mode by connecting two different high power microwave sources. For the investigation of this plasma feeding method a klystron generator at 18 GHz proving up to 2 kW microwave power was used together with a traveling wave tube amplifier with a 12.75-14.5 GHz bandwidth and 650 W maximum output power. Several experiments were carried out in order to verify the performance with respect to the single frequency operation. Different ion source configurations were investigated and different frequencies and power combinations were analyzed with the aim to maximize the high charge state ion production and to reduce the ion...

The laboratory was restructured in 2005/2006 with nuclear physics phased out, the CELSIUS ring dismantled and the WASA detector moved to Jülich. The focus of activities became thereby shifted towards, mainly, proton therapy and, in addition, testing of radiation effects using protons and neutrons in a beam sharing mode. The increase in demand on (a) beam time, and (b) consequential faster changes between various setups, necessitated some minor upgrades. For the same reason our energy measuring system needed to be streamlined. As a consequence of the restructuring, night shifts were phased out. By switching off certain power supplies overnight a substantial energy saving has been accomplished.

In order to use the beam as efficient as possible beam sharing is employed. The paper describes the development of a range of control system utilities, for example switching of the beam between users by the principal user instead of being controlled via a cyclotron operator.

Beam intensities are comparable with other similar sources but at the lower end of the spectrum. We are thus investigating a number of methods of improvement. The development of a micro-oven for low melting point materials was successfully concluded. Further development is needed to improve the consumption rate in order to enable more effective use of expensive isotopes. Measurements with operation of the source in the after-glow mode were successful but the pulse to pulse reproducibility should be further improved. Although the maximum gain compared to the CW mode is satisfactory, accomplishing a higher factor would be even more advantageous for beams delivered to CELSIUS. A systematic study of various parameters was started in order to find optimal operating conditions running in the after-glow mode.
