"Άγιοι και δαίμονες" covers the period 1808 to 1831, around the Greek War of Independence, and takes place mainly in Constantinople, but also in Chios and the Black Sea area. "Ιμαρέτ" (the term designates the hostelries for travellers in or near Ottoman towns, which also served as orphanages and shelters for the poor) takes place between 1854 and 1882 in Arta, a town in Epirus annexed to Greece in 1881. The two novels, based on in-depth historical research, depict a broad and realistic spectrum of friendly, neighbourly, indifferent, hostile and murderous relations between the two communities, which lived separate but intertwined lives for centuries.
