This paper proposes a non-parametric hybrid system for autonomous navigation combining the streng... more This paper proposes a non-parametric hybrid system for autonomous navigation combining the strengths of learning classifier systems, evolutionary algorithms, and an immune network model. The system proposed is basically an immune network of classifiers, named CLARINET. CLARINET has three degrees of freedom: the attributes that define the network cells (classifiers) are dynamically adjusted to a changing environment; the network connections are evolved using an evolutionary algorithm; and the concentration of network nodes is varied following a continuous dynamic model of an immune network. CLARINET is described in detail, and the resultant hybrid system demonstrated effectiveness and robustness in the experiments performed, involving the computational simulation of robotic autonomous navigation.

cPSClass: A Constructive Particle Swarm Classifier

The data classification task is one of the main tasks within the knowledge discovering from datab... more The data classification task is one of the main tasks within the knowledge discovering from databases field. Its goal is to allow the correct classification of new objects (records from a database), unknown to the classifier, based upon the extraction of knowledge from objects whose classes are known a priori. The known data can be used to generate a classification model, or simply to infer the class of new objects from those whose classes are known. This paper presents a proposal for a classification algorithm, called Constructive Particle Swarm Classifier (cPSClass), which uses mechanisms from the Particles Swarm Clustering algorithm and Artificial Immune Systems to determine dynamically the number of prototypes from a database and use them to predict the correct class to which a new input object should belong. For performance evaluation the cPSClass was applied to several datasets from the literature and its performance was compared with that of its predecessor version, the nonconstructive Particle Swarm Classifier, and also to some classic algorithms from the literature.

The algorithm developed is based on an ant-clustering algorithm, which was inspired by the behavior of some ant species in the organization their nests. To apply the antclustering algorithm for text document classification, two modifications had to be introduced in the standard algorithm: 1) the use of a metric to evaluate the similarity degree of text data, instead of numeric data; and 2) the proposal of a cooling schedule for a user-defined parameter so as to improve the convergence properties of the algorithm. To illustrate the behavior of the modified algorithm, it was applied to sets of real-world documents taken from the IEEE WCCI-1998 CD.

Two different classes of algorithms to train MLP are tested: bio-inspired, and gradient-based. Comparisons among all the training methods are presented in terms of classification accuracy and diversity of the solutions found.

Adaptive Radius Immune Algorithm for Data Clustering

Many algorithms perform data clustering by compressing the original data into a more compact and ... more Many algorithms perform data clustering by compressing the original data into a more compact and interpretable representation, which can be more easily inspected for the presence of clusters. This, however, can be a risky alternative, because the simplified representation may contain distortions mainly related to the density information present in the data, which can considerably act on the clustering results. In order to treat this deficiency, this paper proposes an Adaptive Radius Immune Algorithm (ARIA), which is capable of maximally preserving the density information after compression by implementing an antibody adaptive suppression radius that varies inversely with the local density in the space. ARIA is tested with both artificial and real world problems obtaining a better performance than the aiNet algorithm and showing that preserving the density information leads to refined clustering results.

In addition to detecting fuzzy clusters, the proposed algorithm dynamically determines a suitable number of clusters in the datasets without the need of prior knowledge, necessary in cPSC to control the number of particles in the swarm. The FcPSC algorithm was applied to six databases from the literature and its performance was compared with that of Fuzzy C-Means, a Fuzzy Artificial Immune Network, a Fuzzy Particle Swarm Clustering and the crisp cPSC. FcPSC showed to be competitive with the algorithms used for comparison and the number of particles generated was smaller than for cPSC.

Since their proposal they have been extensively studied from a biochemical perspective. This work proposes a taxonomy for the main properties of replicators that are important for building computational tools to solve complex problems as well as introduces a computer algorithm that models these entities. The simulation of this algorithm allows the observation and analysis of the behavior of replicators in light of the properties introduced. A number of experiments are performed to show that the proposed taxonomy of properties can be observed by simulating the algorithm introduced.
