Evolvement of ICT in Airline Distribution – Perspectives on Co-creation with IATA NDC and One Order

This paper sheds light on the pitfalls and hurdles that accompany this process making it an interesting learning case of technology disruption and technology adaption for all industries. Even though an open API structure is urgently needed to realize distributed and decentralized co-creation, a main challenge remains the need to organize the cutover from older systems to the next generation.

It has supported the spread of Direct Connects by providing a common standard for linking airlines to travel agencies. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the historical development of airline distribution and to derive implications for the future. Design/methodology/approach This paper follows the approach of Yeoman and McMahon-Beattie (2017) in providing a chronological account based on published research. Findings Direct Connects are discussed to be a step back in the evolution of the distribution landscape because they foster disaggregation. An analysis of the history of distribution finds that a comparison of Direct Connects to the early stages of computer reservation system technology falls short to recognise the tremendous technological and market changes connected to the internet, cloud computing and the rise of low...

The role of very large passenger aircraft in global air transport – a review and outlook to the year 2050

Knowledge on transfer passengers and shares at airport to worldwide levels can be useful industry, policy and research questions. However, as such data is usually not disclosed publically, the structure of transfer volumes and shares has not yet been studied in greater detail. This leaves a research (data) gap which this paper intends to close to some extent. More precisely, we aim at assessing: How total transfer passenger volumes have developed, at worldwide and world region levels; how these relate to the volumes of directly flying passengers; the leading transfer airports in absolute and relative sense; and how the latter have changed over time. We present a methodology to calculate transfer passengers from segment passenger split data provided in the "leg flow" statistics module of a global air transport statistical database which consolidates passenger booking data and estimates from various sources. Departing passenger numbers at the airport level are split into local, beyond, behind and bridge passengers, of which only the latter two count as transfer passengers. The transfer share of an airport is then calculated as the sum of this airport's behind and bridge passengers divided by all departing passengers. Applying this methodology, we estimate transfer passenger numbers and shares for all airports and world regions for the period 2002-2018. The results indicate a declining importance of transfer passengers at the global level; rising transfer volumes and shares in the Middle East region and China, driven by the growth of emerging ChiBoGu (China, Bosporus, Gulf) carriers; decreasing transfer passenger numbers in the U.S., probably due to airline consolidation and hub downsizing activities in the 00s. Finally, key hubs in cities with less touristic appeal like, e.g. Atlanta or Doha, seem to achieve higher transfer shares than gateway hubs in high-profile destinations like Dubai or New York.

Main drivers affecting the shape of supply were new, e.g. low cost, business models, and new aircraft technologies, like the emergence of jet airliners in the 1950s/1960s. One of the most recent and potentially highly disrupting developments was the announcement by Airbus in 2015 and 2018 to launch new long-range (LR) and extra long-range (XLR) versions of its largest narrowbody aircraft, A321neo. With this step, Airbus is tapping into a market which is covered insufficiently by existing aircraft types. The new Airbus A321 versions will be used to replace the aging fleet of Boeing 757 aircraft, but will also offer airlines the opportunity to serve thin long-haul routes. Airlines may offer a higher number of frequencies than with today's widebody aircraft or introduce completely new non-stop services, where existing types are either limited in range or have too many seats. We estimate the market potential for long-haul narrowbody aircraft with a model using Sabre's Market Intelligence origin-destination demand and Innovata's flight schedules data. Furthermore, the implications of the new long-range narrowbody aircraft for airline business models will be discussed.

Prior to this, the struggling carrier had already been reducing its domestic capacities and adjusting its service patterns, which had impacts on the competitive situation for the remaining carriers on various domestic origin-destination (O&D) markets. This paper aims at identifying resulting changes of, e.g., the yields generated in intra-German air transport. In the German domestic market, the relevant competition per route can be narrowed down to a few players as opposed to continental or intercontinental flights. We found evidence that on 90% of the TOP20 O&Ds, representing 96% of the total passenger volume, revenue per pax (as an indicator for yield) increased. We found FRA-BER and MUC-BER-both O&Ds with intense Easyjet competition to be the only O&Ds that did not show an increase in price/yield after the market exit of Air Berlin.

Their high market share is driving the growth in the local tourism industry but, at the same time, the dependency on these carriers may constitute a major risk. This paper examines the impact of BoGu carrier arrivals on the local tourism industry drawing on multiple linear regression analysis and finds that all countries are dependent on the BoGu carriers. However, the Seychelles and the Maldives are showing a higher effect size than Mauritius. We investigate reasons for these findings and perform a moderation analysis to identify levers to manage the risks of changes in BoGu carrier capacity.
