Adoption always represents for the child a loss of emotional ties with birthparents and a develop... more Adoption always represents for the child a loss of emotional ties with birthparents and a development of new attachments with adoptive parents. Adoption can be considered as a life-time process of the members involved in the adoption triangle, that is birth parents, adoptive parents and the child. The article discusses the loss of emotional bonds from primary caretakers as a psychological trauma and addresses mournings difficulties in adoptees. Problems with the development of new attachments with adoptive parents such as loyalty conflicts and the revelation of the adoption are described. Family romance phantasy in adoption and the search for their origin by young adoptees are also explored. Aspects of family dynamics in the adoptive process and the specific difficulties adoptive parents encounter are reviewed. Preventive and therapeutic measures are presented.

We review here the evidence reminding us that the immune system and the brain have a close relati... more We review here the evidence reminding us that the immune system and the brain have a close relationship that until recently has remained hidden. We begin with some of the facts concerning brain immune system interactions looking at the anatomical barriers and the mediators of immune and nervous system functions. We analyze the immunological events as well as some of the poorly understood symptoms of a devastating autoimmune disease of the brain such as multiple sclerosis. Finally, we consider the clinical enigmas where there is evidence that in stress situations the brain can influence the immune system through modification of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), a key player in stress responses.

Psychobiological aspects of early childhood psychological trauma, causes and stress effects, as well as specific characteristics and cycles of coping with psychological trauma are presented. The importance to grieve the losses experienced through traumatisation is discussed and the specific mourning process of children.

Background Families with a parent suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) must cope with the unpre... more Background Families with a parent suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) must cope with the unpredictable course of the disease. Most studies analyzing factors that influence coping abilities in families with a member affected with MS used questionnaires to assess this ability. Methods On the contrary, the present study used a semi-structured psychiatric interview and used the resulting information to calculate a general measure of coping ability (coping index [CI]). We administered this interview to 44 MS patients, their partners and offspring and conducted a neuropsychological and physical evaluation of the patients to determine the impact of physical disability, cognitive dysfunction, and depression on the process of coping by the patient, the healthy partner, and children. Results The CI of patients was best predicted by measures of their depressive symptoms, divided attention, and estimated verbal intelligence. Prevalence and predictors of emotional and behavioural functioning of children where a parent has cancer

This study aimed to evaluate prevalence and risk factors for emotional and behavioral problems in... more This study aimed to evaluate prevalence and risk factors for emotional and behavioral problems in dependent children of cancer patients using a multinational research design. The sample comprised 350 ill parents, 250 healthy partners, and 352 children. Parents assessed the child&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39;s psychological functioning using the Child Behavior Checklist, parental depression using the Beck Depression Inventory, family functioning using the General Functioning subscale of the Family Assessment Device, quality of life using short-form questionnaire, and adolescents (N = 168) self-reported psychological functioning using the Youth Self Report. Children and adolescents, in particular latency-aged boys and adolescent girls, were of higher risk of psychosocial problems than norms. There was a higher risk of problems when the father was ill than when the mother was ill, but it remains unclear whether this difference was due to the different diagnoses of fathers and mothers, gender or other factors. The best predictor of internalizing problems in children and adolescents was parental depression, and the best predictor of externalizing problems in children and adolescents was family dysfunction. The results indicate the need for a family-oriented approach to psychological support of cancer patients.
