As control systems become increasingly complicated and generate increasingly complex control information, smart systems provide a means of recognizing multidimensional information and processing this information to provide a useful response. The ability to observe, decide, and act are fundamental to the smart system. This thesis looks at the current state of smart system technologies with a viewpoint on some of the issues that are important in their implementation. A newer concept of intelligent control, involving knowledge based systems, fuzzy control and artificial neural networks, is also looked at. Also, a state-space formulation is used in extending the idea of hierarchical control and finite element concepts to the analysis of a shear beam.
