Validation of UAS Command and Control Link Switchover Internetworking and Security Requirements

As the aviation community integrates Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the National Airspace S... more As the aviation community integrates Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System (NAS), one of the technical issues that must be handled concerns the Command and Control (C2) Link from the remote pilot Control Station (CS) to the UAS. The C2 Link can switch between carriers during the UAS mission. For example, the link may switch from a terrestrial network to a satellite-based communications network (SATCOM), or from one terrestrial network to another. Requirements for interworking and security of the C2 Link switchover between two point-to-point Line of Sight (LOS) links, switchover between LOS terrestrial C2 Link and a SATCOM network, and switchover between Radio Line of Sight (RLOS) terrestrial C2 Link and a commercial terrestrial cellular network have been developed, and this paper discusses the validation of those requirements.

NASA's NextGen Concepts and Technology Development (CTD) Project focuses on capabilities to i... more NASA's NextGen Concepts and Technology Development (CTD) Project focuses on capabilities to improve safety, capacity and efficiency of the National Air Space (NAS). In order to achieve those objectives, NASA sought industry-Government partnerships to research and identify solutions for traffic flow management, dynamic airspace configuration, separation assurance, super density operations, airport surface operations and similar forward-looking air-traffic modernization (ATM) concepts. Data exchanges over NAS being the key enabler for most of these ATM concepts, the Sub-Topic area 3 of the CTD project sought to identify technology candidates that can satisfy air-to-air and air/ground communications needs of the NAS in the year 2060 timeframe. Honeywell, under a two-year contract with NASA, is working on this communications technology research initiative. This report summarizes Honeywell's research conducted during the second year of the study task.

A comprehensive approach is offered for avionics engineering topics and curricula for educational... more A comprehensive approach is offered for avionics engineering topics and curricula for educational activities that better meet contemporary aerospace industry requirements. These topics include a growing demand for airspace mobility services, the proliferation of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), and the required enhancements in avionics and air traffic management (ATM) design standards (hardware and software components); targeting the evolving safety, interoperability, and cybersecurity needs of the aeronautical and space sectors. Proposed topics and approaches stem from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Aerospace and Electronics Systems Society (AESS) Avionics Systems Panel (ASP) discussions aimed at aligning educational approaches to relevant industry needs and technical advancements in the field of avionics engineering. Suitable curricular development approaches are proposed to address the career life cycle of avionics engineers, including undergraduate and graduate education. Collaborative exchange and discussion, including both industrial and academic perspectives, focus on informing curricular development approaches that bridge the gaps between higher education, industry practice, and public stakeholder needs toward maximizing educational outcomes and preparedness of the avionics engineering workforce to tackle some of the most important challenges and opportunities faced by the aerospace sector.

Congressional attention to Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) 1 has caused the Federal Aviation Admi... more Congressional attention to Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) 1 has caused the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to move the National Airspace System (NAS) Integration project forward, but using guidelines, practices and procedures that are yet to be fully integrated with the FAA Aviation Management System. The real drive for change in the NAS will to come from both UAS operators and the government jointly seeing an accurate forecast of UAS usage demand data. This solid forecast information would truly get the attention of planners. This requires not an aggregate demand, but rather a picture of how the demand is spread across small to large UAS, how it is spread across a wide range of missions, how it is expected over time and where, in terms of geospatial locations, will the demand appear. In 2012 the Volpe Center performed a study of the overall future demand for UAS. This was done by aggregate classes of aircraft types. However, the realistic expected demand will appear in clusters of aircraft activities grouped by similar missions on a smaller geographical footprint and then growing from those small cells. In general, there is not a demand forecast that is tightly coupled to the real purpose of the mission requirements (e.g. in terms of real locations and physical structures such as wind mills to inspect, farms to survey, pipelines to patrol, etc.). Being able to present a solid basis for the demand is crucial to getting the attention of investment, government and other fiscal planners. To this end, Mosaic ATM under NASA guidance is developing a crowd sourced, demand forecast engine that can draw forecast details from commercial and government users and vendors. These forecasts will be vetted by a governance panel and then provide for a sharable accurate set of projection data. Our paper describes the project and the technical approach we are using to design and create access for users to the forecast system.
