Ph.D. in Geography from University of Barcelona (1993), I've been a senior lecturer and researcher at the University of Girona since 1993. My research interest is focused on Landscape Planning and Management on Coastal areas and Mediterranean landscapes, applying the framework provided by Landscape Ecology and Biogeography. I've published several books and papers on these subjects. At present, I'm heading the Landscape Laboratory of the University of Girona.

Here we focus on an improved floristic understanding of the condition and impacts to coastal dune... more Here we focus on an improved floristic understanding of the condition and impacts to coastal dunes along the Catalan coastline of Spain. We identified 21 native dune-restricted plant species that can serve as indicators of the ecological integrity of these coastal dunes, a habitat that has been impacted by both urbanization and tourism. To that end, we employed a new analysis approach that calculated the ratio of the diversity of the dune restricted species to the overall plant diversity of the site. Values of this analysis could range from 0 to 1, with 1 corresponding to the most ecologically intact habitats. Our analyses revealed that regardless of habitat size, sand dunes that lacked significant human activity and that were not adjacent to urbanization had more dune restricted plant species present and so had values closer to "1 ′′. However, larger dune habitats retained a higher number of dune-restricted species despite their proximity to urbanization or levels of tourism, indicating that their larger size provided resilience to negative anthropogenic effects. By first identifying key, dune restricted plant species that should occupy this dune landscape we were able to then provide an independent, objective indicator of the impacts of human activity on this ecologically important habitat.

Aquest article actualitza el coneixement florístic de les espècies que colonitzen les platges i d... more Aquest article actualitza el coneixement florístic de les espècies que colonitzen les platges i dunes del litoral català, i identifica el grup d’espècies típiques que colonitzen aquests paisatges, així com estableix aquelles espècies restringides als hàbitats dunars, el seu rang de distribució i la seva raresa. Es van mostrejar 87 sistemes dunars a partir de transsectes ortogonals a la línia de costa, que s’estenien des de la vegetació anual de la platja alta fins a l’extrem interior del sistema dunar. Es van identificar un total de 224 espècies. El nombre va ser molt proper a l’obtingut en el càlcul del SMaoTao i dels dos estimadors de la riquesa del nombre total d’espècies, Chao2 i Jacknife2. L’anàlisi de la freqüència de les 224 espècies enregistrades va portar a establir un conjunt de 87 que es poden considerar com les espècies típiques dels hàbitats de platja i duna de la costa catalana. Abstract In recent decades, much of the progress observed in the study of beaches to aid policy h... more Abstract In recent decades, much of the progress observed in the study of beaches to aid policy has focused on producing sound substantive and/or contextual knowledge. However, attention has not usually been paid to the procedural manner in which it has been produced. Guided by an open learning process, this study aims to develop and present an expanded reviewed assessment of the Catalan coast operationalized by means of the Double-Looped Beach Quality Index (DL-BQI). Such openness helps us to understand which narratives of beach management in Catalonia are operating (and which are excluded), the extent to which they are unfolding, and the capacity of the DL-BQI to provide information for policymaking. Data collection enabled assessment of 96 representative beaches on the Catalan coast, that may find correspondence with other geographic locations. Both the instrument used for the assessment – the DL-BQI – and its results were co-evaluated at a multi-stakeholder meeting. In general, beaches have mainly been conditioned to supply elements for tourism and leisure. Different pressures have arisen from the orientation towards such activities, usually according to beach type, most of them negatively impacting the ecological assets and natural heritage of beaches. The economic growth narrative, albeit predominant, was shown to be deficient for tackling complex coastal problems, i.e. intensifying ecological deterioration. Alternatively, the study shows the importance for regional coastal policy of considering the value of beaches as natural systems, as advocated, to a greater or lesser extent, by the narratives of sustainability, environmental protection and integrated coastal zone management. This research innovates on considering substantive, contextual and procedural dimensions of knowledge quality for the governance of beach systems, by relating dimensions, narratives and outcomes.

The current sanitary crisis caused by the rapid expansion of the COVID-19 disease offered the pos... more The current sanitary crisis caused by the rapid expansion of the COVID-19 disease offered the possibility of giving respite to the dune systems and allowing their natural regeneration after the effects of the storm Gloria. This storm affected the Levantine and Balearic coast between January 21 and 23, and when some systems began to recover, the hard management of the coast, compromised again the integrity of the dune systems. The urgency to have the systems “ready” for consumption and exploitation moves away from the concept of sustainable tourism management and does not contribute to adaptation to climate change. In this work, we point out some management actions on emerged beaches that have taken place during the lockdown and deconfinement. We focus on three management actions that reveal malpractice, such as levelling and mechanical cleaning, the construction of breakwaters and the removal of Posidonia oceanica. La erosion costera es un problema de ambito global que se muestra en toda su crudeza en las playa... more La erosion costera es un problema de ambito global que se muestra en toda su crudeza en las playas. El problema suscitado en la playa de S’Abanell es el de una disminucion de su superficie como consecuencia de una evolucion morfologica en la que predominan los procesos de perdida de sedimentos (erosion) sobre los procesos de ganancia de los mismos (acrecion). En este capitulo se describe la evolucion del problema a lo largo del tiempo y su empeoramiento en la ultima decada. S’Abanell nos muestra un claro ejemplo de gestion de la zona costera reactiva y desintegrada donde, en vez de optar por un planteamiento estrategico sobre un estado deseado (una vision consensuada), se opta por ir resolviendo (parcheando) los problemas que van saliendo, problemas que cada vez son mas graves e irreversibles. Se echa de menos un compromiso de todas las administraciones implicadas en la busqueda de una solucion unica que tenga en cuenta la participacion de los distintos agentes sociales implicados. Ademas, la aproximacion a realizar debiera tener en consideracion toda la dimension espacial del problema: el delta del Tordera en su totalidad.

Considerando las playas como sistemas socioecologicos y la Gestion Integrada de Zonas Costeras (G... more Considerando las playas como sistemas socioecologicos y la Gestion Integrada de Zonas Costeras (GIZC) como la herramienta basica para alcanzar un desarrollo sostenible en la zona costera, en este trabajo se desarrolla un indice de calidad integral de playas (Beach Quality Index, BQI) que responde a un analisis funcional de estas. El indice esta pensado como herramienta para promover la aplicacion del concepto de sistemas de gestion medioambiental integrados para la gestion especifica de las playas. El BQI esta formado por trece indicadores parciales agrupados en las tres funciones basicas que realizan las playas (recreativa, natural y de proteccion). El BQI no solo evalua la calidad integral de la playa sino que sirve como cuadro de mando para su gestion y de ayuda en los processos de monitorizacion. Adaptando dicho esquema a las visiones particulares de cada playa, podemos movernos hacia una gestion mucho mas ecoeficiente y sostenible de estos sistemas.
