Changes of the extent of the Arctic Ocean sea-ice cover over the past century, the geological rec... more Changes of the extent of the Arctic Ocean sea-ice cover over the past century, the geological record of the Arctic Ocean seafloor of the youngest geological past, as well as the evidence of a pre-Glacial temperate to warm Arctic Ocean during Mesozoic and Palaeogene time are witnesses of dramatic revolutions of the Arctic oceanography. The climate over northwestern Europe on a regional scale as well as the global environment have responded to these revolutions instantly over geological time scales. Results of ocean drilling in the deep northern North Atlantic document an onset of Northern Hemisphere glaciation towards the end of the middle Miocene (10-14 Ma). While the available evidence points to early glaciations of modest extent and intensity centred around southern Greenland, the early to mid-Pliocene intervals record a sudden intensification of ice-rafting in the Labrador and Norwegian Greenland seas as well as in the Arctic Ocean proper. The Greenland ice cap seems to have remained rather stable whereas the northwest European ice shields have experienced rapid and dramatic changes leading to their frequent complete destruction. Many sediment properties seem to suggest that orbital parameters (Milankovitch-frequencies) and their temporal variability control important properties of the deep-sea floor depositional environment. Obliquity (with approximately 40 ka) seems to be dominant in pre-Glacial (middle Miocene) as well as Glacial (post late Miocene) scenarios whereas eccentricity (with approximately 100 ka) only dominated the past 600-800 ka. PlioPleistocene deposits of the Arctic Ocean proper, of the entire Norwegian Greenland and of the Labrador seas have recorded the almost continuous presence of sea-ice cover with only short ‘interglacial’ intervals when the eastern Norwegian Sea was ice-free. The documentation of long-term changes of the oceanographic and climatic properties of the Arctic environments recorded in the sediment cover of the deepsea floors might also serve to explain scenarios which have no modern analog, but which might well develop in the future under the influence of the anthropogenic drift towards warmer global climates.

The scientific exploration of central and northern Siberia as well as the adjacent Arctic Ocean h... more The scientific exploration of central and northern Siberia as well as the adjacent Arctic Ocean has been traditionally supported by German scientists, either by German nationals or by naturalized former Germans who had moved to Russia. The history and development of this exploration can be subdivided into four phases: pre-Humboldtian, Humboldtian, post-Humboldtian and modern times. The latest phase unfolded after perestroika opened up a new chapter of access to previously closed regions in northern Siberia and of intimate cooperation between Russian and German science organizations, with the support of the responsible federal ministries both in Russia as well as in Germany.

In spite of the critical role of the Arctic Ocean in climate evolution, it is the only sub-basin ... more In spite of the critical role of the Arctic Ocean in climate evolution, it is the only sub-basin of the world's oceans that has essentially not been sampled by the drill ships of the Deep-Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) or the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), and its long-term environmental history and tectonic structure is therefore poorly known. Exceptions are the ODP Leg 151 and the more recent very successful ACEX-expedition of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). This lack of data represents one of the largest gaps of information in modern Earth Science. Therefore, the new research icebreaker AURORA BOREALIS will be equipped with drilling facilities to fulfil the needs of the IODP for a -Mission-Specific Platform- to drill in deep, permanently ice-covered ocean basins. This icebreaker must be also powerful enough to maintain station against the drifting sea-ice cover and will have to be equipped with a dynamic positioning system. Origin of Organic-Carbon-Rich Mid-Cretaceous Limestones, Mid-Pacific Mountains and Southern Hess Rise

Limestones of mid-Cretaceous age containing as much as 8.6 percent organic carbon were cored at o... more Limestones of mid-Cretaceous age containing as much as 8.6 percent organic carbon were cored at one site (463) in the Mid-Pacific Mountains and at two sites (465, 466) on southern Hess Rise, central North Pacific Ocean, during Leg 62 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. In the Mid-Pacific Mountains, three layers containing more than 2% organic carbon are associated with volcanic ash in silicified limestone of early Aptian age (-112-113 m.y. old), a time when the site was south of the equator and considerably shallower than at present (2525 m). The beds of laminated, organiccarbon-rich limestone, implying deposition in an oxygen-deficient environment, are interbedded with normal pelagic limestones. This sequence lies on interbedded pelagic limestones and clastic limestones containing locally derived shallow-water carbonate debris, and it is overlain by interbedded green, gray, and pink limestones. The organic-carbonrich strata on southern Hess Rise are dark-olive, laminated limestones with rare interbeds of altered volcanic ash of the late Aptian to early Cenomanian (-98 to 103 m.y. old), a time when the site was passing under the equatorial highproductivity zone and subsiding from shallow to intermediate water depths. The organic-carbon-rich limestone sequence overlies volcanic basement (trachyte) in this part of Hess Rise. The association of volcanogenic sediments with organic-carbon-rich strata on Hess Rise is not as striking as in the Mid-Pacific Mountains, but the occurrences do suggest a coincidence of mid-plate volcanic activity and accumulation of organic matter at intermediate water depths in the tropical North Pacific Ocean during the mid-Cretaceous. Pyrolysis assays indicate that most of the organic matter in the limestone on Hess Rise is composed of lipid-rich kerogen derived from marine organisms. Limestones from the Mid-Pacific Mountains contain lower concentrations of organic matter. Pyrolysis assays and extractable hydrocarbons indicate that the organic matter in samples from Hole 463 is also predominantly of marine origin, and that contributions of terrigenous organic matter were probably minor. Analyses of stable carbon isotopes indicate that the organic carbon in all analyzed samples is isotopically light (δ 13 C-24 to-29‰) relative to most modern marine organic carbon (δ 13 C-9 to-30%), and that the lightest carbon (δ 13 C-28 to-29‰) is also the most lipid-rich. The organic-carbon-rich mid-Cretaceous limestones on Hess Rise, the Mid-Pacific Mountains, and other elevated plateaus and seamounts in the Pacific Ocean are approximately equivalent in age (mid-Cretaceous,-85-120 m.y.) to organic-carbon-rich lithofacies elsewhere in the world ocean, particularly in the Atlantic Ocean and parts of the Indian Ocean. However, strata of equivalent age deposited in the Pacific Ocean at greater depths do not contain any carbonrich horizons. This observation, together with the evidence that the plateau sites were considerably shallower and close to the equator during the mid-Cretaceous, suggests that an expanded mid-water oxygen minimum, together with local restrictions in circulation, may have resulted in the preservation of organic matter in an oxygen-deficient environment where the oxygen minimum impinged on elevated platforms such as Hess Rise and the Mid-Pacific Mountains.
