Dr. Somenath Roy Chowdhury
Dr. Somenath Roy Chowdhury, an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, is currently working as
an Assistant Professor (Grade - I) and Programme Chair - Research in the School of
Biosciences and Technology in the Galgotias University, Greater Noida. After completing
his B.Tech in Biotechnology from the then The West Bengal University of Technology, he
worked as a Junior Research Fellow in Agricultural & Food Engineering Department, IIT-
Kharagpur. His project was an industry-academia collaborative study on in situ
biomethanation and biodepolymerization of low rank coal, funded by the ONGC, New
Delhi. Later, Dr. Roy Chowdhury joined CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology,
Kolkata for his PhD under the joint supervision of Dr. Hemanta K. Majumder and Prof.
(Dr.) Parasuraman Jaisankar. He worked to develop topoisomerase targeting compounds for
antitrypanosomatid and anticancer applications. He did first postdoc in the same Institute as
a CSIR-Research Associate. He provided the first insight on in vivo functioning of TDP1
protein in response to TOPcc-associated genome damage in the parasite Leishmania
donovani. He received the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) - Young Scientist
Platinum Jubilee Award in 2020. He then moved to University of Muenster, Germany, as a
Postdoctoral Research Associate, for his second postdoc and joined the group of Prof.
Dagmar Klostermeier. His project involved elucidation of conformational dynamics of
gyrase in pathogenic and nonpathogenic bacteria. In 2021, he received Alexander von
Humboldt Fellowship to unravel the roles of species-specific structural elements in
supercoiling cycle of gyrase through single molecule approaches. Dr. Roy Chowdhury has
17 peer-reviewed journal publications including one as a corresponding author to date. He
also has published 2 book chapters. He has also presented his work in more than 20
National and International Conferences. In 2024, he was granted an Indian patent on the
technology developed for bioconversion of lignite as his JRF work in IIT-Kharagpur. He has
received many awards including EMBO-Travel Grant, TATA Trust Professional
Enhancement Grant, Competitive Seed Grant (Galgotias University). At his current position,
he is supervising three PhD students. He is also serving as an issue editor for the “Journal of
Visualised Experiments”. Apart from his academic
responsibilities, Dr. Chowdhury is also the Lab Coordinator of his department and has been
overseeing the research trajectory of the School of Biosciences & Technology (GU)
