Hosam Elhegazy received his PhD (2020) from the Department of Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering) at Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Structural Engineering and Construction Management, Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Future University in Egypt (FUE). His research interests include the fields of structural systems, construction management, life-cycle assessment, green buildings, value engineering, productivity, projects' performance, project control, cost estimation and construction technology. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed international journals with particular focus on structural systems, cost estimation and topics relating to project control. He is working in the construction and project management for construction of Steel Structures Projects (From Feb.2012 till Now).

There are numerous structural lateral systems used in multistory buildings design such as the she... more There are numerous structural lateral systems used in multistory buildings design such as the shear wall, frame system, framed with core, dual systems and superframes, etc. Additionally, the system of slabs such as (Solid Slab, Flat Slab, Flat plates, Hollow blocks, ... and Waffle Slabs). Generally, the structural systems of multi-story buildings are considered to be different types. Multi-story buildings are commonly used in residential, commercial and administrative projects; therefore, determining the structural system with minimum cost is the top priority of the structural designer. This research aims to introduce recommendations for the optimum structural system for a multi-story Reinforced Concrete (R.C.) building from a perspective of direct cost to help decision-makers in the preliminary design for choosing the optimum structural system. This paper outlines the development of charts to predict optimal structural system costing, using the status of early conceptual design as the charts input. In order to achieve that goal, a parametric study was carried out using 27 RC buildings with several stories ranging between 5 to 50 floors and grid spacing ranged between 6.0 to 12.0 m. Three floor systems were considered which are solid, ribbed and flat slabs.

Multi-story buildings are part of a relatively specialized field of design and construction projects. They deal not only with a building's design and creation but also with its ongoing operation and maintenance. Because a large portion of the money and time expended by both the public and private sectors is used for construction, especially multi-story buildings, it is essential for owners and builders to think about how to optimize the balance between cost and function as they make major decisions about multistory buildings. The concept of value engineering has evolved significantly and has been expanded over the years; today, numerous standards and related manuals exist. Various engineering databases, international journals, and conference proceedings were searched. International journals were searched for relevant research papers. This paper provides perspectives on value engineering in the contemporary structural engineering context in order to frame the breadth and multiple dimensions it encompasses, to summarize recent activities on selected relevant topics, and to highlight possible future directions in research and implementations.

This problem is addressed through plugging, which falls into three categories, namely, slight, mild, and severe plugging (<50, 50-100, >100, respectively). Filtering is an important method for water irrigation designed to eliminate suspended solids, and the types and forms of filtering differ based on the purpose served by water use. Many remote and optical sensing techniques involving light interaction with a medium being investigated can detect TSSs in polluted water. Remote sensing applied to water substances is beneficial for monitoring water samples.

This research studies prediction models for optical water properties, which are very important to... more This research studies prediction models for optical water properties, which are very important to save time consumption to easy control of irrigation systems to make it smart irrigation systems and changing manual system with automatic systems, moreover the suitable time to implement maintenance. One of the most important reasons to use a regression model in this study is to have the ability to use a simple laser device to measure one optical parameter or physical parameters to predict the other parameters by regression models, which will save more money used by an expensive laser device to measure the three optical properties (reflection, transmission, and absorption). Data collected through laboratory experiments were then put through various machine learning regression models. The applied models are random forest (RF), XGBoost (XGB), support vector machine (SVR), and multiple linear regression (MLR). Four scenarios implemented these models; the first scenario included [pressure difference (Bar), wavelength (nm), total suspended solids (TSS)] for samples of Water taken from the filtration system, the second scenario included (Bar, nm, TSS, and reflection), the third scenario included (Bar, nm, TSS and transmission). The fourth scenario is (Bar, nm, TSS, transmission, and reflection). The findings of this research were SVR in scenario 3 (SVR3) had a high correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.95) and minimum error, followed by MLR in scenario 3 (MLR3) and scenario 2 (MLR2), which had the same correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.95), but errors were higher than SVR3. The lowest root means square error (RMSE) was in SVR in scenario 1 (SVR1) by 0.180, followed by RF in scenario 1 (RF1) by 0.181, and the highest was in RF in scenario 2 (RF 2) by 15.2. Based on these performance criteria, SVR3 is the best model to predict optical properties in this study.

Different types of greenhouse structures are used to produce crops, and each type has advantages for a particular application, having been designed to meet multiple and specific requirements. This paper introduces a quality function deployment (QFD) framework to select two optimal greenhouse types (single-span and multi-span). This study aims to demonstrate greenhouse management and practices and review the development efforts during the last two decades. A market survey, focus group discussion, and personal interviews revealed nine key performance indicators (KPIs) (cost, wind loads, crop loads, roof slope, light transmission, flexibility, maintainability, rapid spread/ease of control, and heating and ventilation). Then, the participating decision-makers identified nine functional requirements, which, if fulfilled, would boost client satisfaction. The framework designed in this paper was developed to select and analytically investigate the optimal system for greenhouse microclimate control based on the retrieved KPIs and functional requirements for client satisfaction. This QFD framework can assist decision-makers, in the preliminary phase, in selecting optimal systems for greenhouse microclimate control based on their individualized situations.

The study was performed for the owners and decision-makers of a construction company in Egypt, as a sample, and the owners' requirements. Design/methodology/approach-The data collection process and the type of data collected are described in this section. The data used in this study was collected from a questionnaire survey and was quantitatively analyzed using statistical analysis to identify the practices that have a statistically significant correlation with the performance of the design in the structural system of multistory buildings. A structured questionnaire five points Likert scaled based was adopted in this study; the questionnaires were distributed to experts, managers in real estate companies, construction industry-academic experts and advisors. The resulting list of factors, issues and knowledge gaps was subjected to a questionnaire survey for quantitative confirmation and identification of the most important factors, issues and knowledge gaps by distributing the questionnaires to experts, managers in real estate companies, construction industry-academic experts, and advisor to identify ambiguous questions/items and to test the techniques used to collect data. Findings-The effect of many internal and external factors that affect on value engineering and decision support systems, such as schedule time, cost, the purpose of the building, availability of materials and environmental, needs to be considered in the structural system for multi-story buildings. The final proposal for the house of quality-chart helps designers and decision-makers in the preliminary phase and feasibility study stage for choosing the structural system using value engineering analysis for multi-story buildings. Also, construction and engineering industries can use the findings from this study as a basis for selecting the optimal structural system for multi-story buildings. The estimating team will be able to accurately make decisions and give recommendations regarding an optimal structural system for multi-story buildings for different activities. Practical implications-The proposed approach enables decision-makers and designers to select the optimum system for multi-story buildings according to the key performance indicators (KPIs) toward client satisfaction and conduct analytical investigations to facilitate decision-making in a structural system for the multi-story building in Egypt. Nuclear energy may be a solution to provide clean power. Nuclear power plants (NPPs) use nuclear fission to generate electricity. There are numerous challenges to overcome for successful implementation of NPPs. This study presents an up-to-date overview of the principal research topics and trends within the NPP research domain, with the purpose of identifying opportunities and obstacles in NPP projects. Some of the challenges, including technological challenges, economic challenges, institutional/governance challenges, and social challenges, are examined, and the future of NPPs is discussed, including (i) the history of NPPs; (ii) the benefits of NPPs; (iii) major challenges in NPP construction; (iv) a review of the current state of the art for implementing NPPs; (v) the most important opportunity for implementing NPPs; (vi) the economics (life cycle costing) of nuclear energy; (vii) a comparison of NPP and renewable energy operations; (viii) different operational constraints for NPPs compared to other power plants; and (ix) nuclear energy for sustainable development. Issues in NPP construction and possible solutions are also addressed.

The survey was conducted to assess the cost impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on the construction industry, considering essential aspects, such as manpower, plant and machinery, and material, and their net effect on overall construction cost. The recommendations covered in this paper address many such measures under short, medium, and long-term categories. These measures underline the need to improve systems and processes for adequately responding to the current changing environment and effectively confronting such disruptions in the future. In addition, the paper serves as a start to thinking about the study of procedures during a future pandemic to inhibit any impact on the project timeline or personnel health.

An Exploratory Study on the Impact of the Construction Industry on Climate Change

The lack of awareness of the construction industry’s impact on climate change could be very harmful in terms of CO2 emission, water and soil pollution, etc. This paper aims to explore the critical factors in the Egyptian construction industry that contributes to climate change. Moreover, given the shared features between the construction industry in Egypt and those in other countries, this research could also shed light on the general impacts of the construction industry on the various aspects of climate change. So, to achieve this aim, an intensive literature review was carried out to identify various factors contributing to climate change within the construction industry. This is followed by conducting 11 interviews with construction experts to explore any further factors throughout the lifecycle of a construction project. The identified factors from the literature review and the interviews were used to design a questionnaire survey to collect construction professionals’ opinions on the impact of these factors on climate change in Egypt. 48 valid responses were received. The collected data were statistically analyzed to rank and determine the criticality level of these factors. The results revealed that the most significant factors influencing climate change are the impact of industrial construction on climate change, the use of primary renewable energy as raw materials during the construction and use phases, and the effect of heavy civil and highway construction on climate change. The results also show that managing these factors requires considerable awareness and proactive actions during the project life cycle and pre-construction stage. The findings could inform decision-makers and construction professionals to raise awareness and make informed decisions to handle these key factors and minimize their potential contribution to climate change. Therefore, it can be recommended that construction clients may involve a climate change management plan as a requirement of tender documents.

Although earlier researches intensively studied this issue, it is still not completely covered. This research aims to introduce recommendations for the optimum gravity and lateral systems for a multi-story reinforced concrete (RC) building from a perspective of direct cost. In order to achieve that goal, a parametric study was carried out using 72 RC buildings with several stories ranged between 5 and 50 floors, and grid spacing ranged between 6.0 and 12.0 m. Four floor systems were considered, solid, 2 ways ribbed, waffle, and flat slabs. Also, three lateral loads resisting systems were considered which are intermediate moment resisting frames, shear walls, and a dual system. The study covered the low, medium and high rise buildings. The results indicated that the dual system is the most suitable system for medium and high rise buildings with combination with solid slabs for short spans and ribbed slabs for medium and long spans. On the other hand, frame with solid slabs is the optimum for low rise with short spans and shear wall with the flat slab is the optimum for low rise with medium and long spans.

Often, due to the time constraints imposed by the design schedule and budget restrictions, the number of design alternatives considered is limited. This research focuses on composite flooring systems for multi-story buildings and the application of value techniques to the construction industry. The study uses data that obtained from the RSMeans Assemblies Books for the period 1997 to 2019. The data obtained from RSMeans consists of assemblies cost ($/sf of floor) as the dependent variable; and the structural span (ft.), superimposed load (p.s.f), unit cost of sheet metal ($/LF of sheet), unit cost of concrete ($/CY), unit cost of steel structural ($/ton), and total load (p.s.f) as the independent variables. A simple computer model is designed for recommending the optimal composite flooring system of a multi-story building, during the preliminary design stage.
