The map portraits the blueprint of the combined operational war plans for the Polish military in the late 1960’s and 70’s. It details the offensive against NATO countries and their forces in Northern Europe. As such, this map is clearly designed as an operational map produced to outline and regulate, not just the actual plan of the offensive, but also to produce a narrative about the Polish army as capable of undertaking such a massive enterprise. We argue, with a point of departure in this particular map, that the regional, operational scale of military maps can be understood as performative maps, outlining not just plans and structuring space, but often also narratives.

Paradigm shift in the concept of security and policy after the Cold War and September 11 placed a priority on the significance of collective security on a global scale, and essentially changed the concept of the mission, structure, formation and the functioning principles of armed forces. These challenges are important for the Lithuanian Army as well. Under new conditions these challenges lead to the search for the most effective model of armed forces and highlight the topicality of the problems in question in the monograph. The book presents not only considerations of Lithuanian authors on the reforms in the armed forces, but also articles written by servicemen and scholars from Denmark, United Kingdom and Germany, introducing the development of armed forces in these countries and allowing t...

Thereby you can offer a framework for the junior officer’s initial efforts by presenting the organisation’s roots and highlight the hoped for professional ethos, and it can present a well-illustrated role models copy.

Firstly, it should be acceptable to Germany. Secondly, a response to violations should never lapse into destructive defensive warfare. These two elements were not necessarily compatible and both were politically controversial. However, Danish neutrality was far more robust than perceived. Until March 1918, the hostile German Imperial Navy was blocked from acting until Denmark was violated by major enemy action. The German army had no troops for sideshows in the north.

When advising politicians, professional leaders will seek to present options that they estimate can bring the relatively cheap, early, and acceptable conclusion that both they and their Government hope for. However, the opponent is an independent actor, and he will do everything possible to avoid or at least delay an unfavourable outcome, and all action and interaction in war is influenced by friction and chance. Another reason why prediction is exceedingly difficult is that even known technologies have not been tested under realistic conditions. If the conflict lasts longer than a few months, latent or immature technologies will be developed to a level where they can influence the outcome of the conflict in a decisive way. It is not only the opponent that is an independent actor, so are allies and formally neutral states, and it is very hard to predict ...

From the next table a MI5 counter-intelligence officer monitored the conversation that was meant to expose Moltke as a German spy and pass him incorrect information about the recent naval battle off Jutland. Later that summer Denmark was forced to transfer Moltke to the U.S., but at that time the disinformation passed to him and reinforced by the Danish Minister in London had already worsened a senses in Copenhagen that Denmark was moving closer to involvement in the war. The article follows the chain of disinformation and events.
