Dr. Lesley Farmer, Professor Emerita at California State University (CSU) Long Beach, coordinated the Teacher Librarianship program. She now manages the CSU ICT Literacy Project. She earned her M.S. in Library Science at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and received her doctorate in Adult Education from Temple University. A frequent presenter and writer for the profession, she is a Fulbright scholar and has garnered several honors, from local to international groups. Farmer’s research interests include school librarianship, digital citizenship, information and media literacy, and data analytics.

Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle Group, has enabled the Library of Congress to honor top literacy efforts by organizations throughout the world. The awards also encourage innovative ways to address literacy issues, and disseminate best practices. Applicants submit a project summary and letters of support, and they are selected according to their: innovation, research/best practice basis, replicability, measurable impact, and sustainability. The Director for the Library of Congress Center for the Book chairs the Literacy Awards. A distinguished advisory board (representing several aspects of literacy: authors, literacy agencies, librarians, educators, governmental agencies, and political leaders ) recommend best practices and finalists. Mass media connects the world more than ever because of digital communication. While media offers... more Mass media connects the world more than ever because of digital communication. While media offers venues for access to information and freedom of expression, concerns about media abound, particularly because of social hegemonies. This chapter uses a critical lens to explain media literacy, its impact on adults, while focusing on civic engagement and its potential to advance social justice. Cultural and global contexts of media literacy are also explained. Educational strategies for teaching media literacy to adults in nonformal settings are provided. The chapter also recommends ways that adults can leverage their media literacy to become more engaged global citizens and work for social justice.

Transitioning to college: Impact of high school librarians

Information literacy is part of that picture, although the role of teacher librarians is less clear. While the value of librarians within the education environment has been demonstrated, less research about the transferability between high school and higher education was evident. The research question emerged: what relationship exists between the presence of a high school teacher librarian and freshmen college students' academic success? To answer this question, this study examined five years of a large comprehensive university's freshmen data about their course load, the first semester GPA, and information about the high school from which they graduated: its Title I status and the presence of a high school librarian. The study found that the presence of a high school librarian employed at least half time is significantly correlated with college freshmen's grade point average, However, more explicit attention and support needs to be given to students in Title I schools. In order to be prepared for today's knowledge society, students need to be ICT literate. To e... more In order to be prepared for today's knowledge society, students need to be ICT literate. To ensure that all students become ICT literate requires systematic integration of ICT literacy into the curriculum at the general education level and within each academic discipline. Such integration requires faculty ICT literacy as it applies to their academic content area and instructional practice. Collaboration within academic domains, with expert partnerships of librarians and instructional designers, can boost ICT literacy and facilitate its effective integration for student learning. Therefore, such faculty competency also requires systematic coordination, training, support, and accountability. Efforts need to occur at the course, program, college, campus, and system level in order to ensure that all students learn, practice and apply ICT effectively and responsibly.
