Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On the 29th of April, 1943 German troops shelled and then placed explosives in the Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios on Mt. Olympos in order to demolish the 16th century monastery which they saw as a possible place of refuge for Greek soldiers. The German soldier Karl Faber secretly took this photo a long with a handful of others before the Monastery's destruction. He kept the photos hidden though the war and returned to German with the Wehrmacht left Greece. Many decades later he learned that the monks of the monastery had build a new monastery nearby and had opened a museum of their past. Karl sent the photos to the new monastery to hang in their museum where they can be found today.
