We found the majority of PSTs used algorithmic approaches to provide solutions and often did not provide an explanation or a visual representation to support their reasoning. Two special cases provided insights into challenges PSTs may face when depicting and partitioning the unit within area models. These findings have implications for purposeful sequencing of fraction tasks and intentional instruction around representing and partitioning units.
