Such a tool substitutes computer post-elaboration of field notes, by means of real-time connection to a mobile, local-area network.

This calls for immediate action on promoting the awareness of this cultural treasure, which is hardly accessible by interested common men, as well as on helping domain experts to analyze these engravings and share their understanding and theories about them with other experts and the public. In this position paper, we propose a set of technologies (some of which are partially implemented) for digital preservation of available data about the region. Our technology will allow domain experts to: (i) organize and structure data into an existing collaborative tool set, (2) process it, (3) make assumptions about the way of life of the ancient people based on the data, (4) make the results of such activities available in form of 3D Virtual...

In this work we present Indiana Finder, an interactive visualization system that supports archaeologists in the examination of large repositories of documents and drawings. In particular, the system provides visual analytic support for investigative analysis such as the interpretation of new archaeological findings, the detection of interpretation anomalies, and the discovery of new insights. We illustrate the potential of Indiana Finder in the context of the digital protection and conservation of rock art natural and cultural heritage sites. In this domain, Indiana Finder provides an integrated environment that archaeologists can exploit to investigate, discover, and learn from textual documents, pictures, and drawings related to rock carvings. This goal is accomplished through novel visualization methods including visual similarity ring charts that may help archaeologists in the hard task of dating a symbol in a rock engraving based on its shape and on the surrounding symbols.

The goal of the cooperation is the development of a hardware/software integrated system to be applied to stratigraphic excavation; such a system is based on two new technologies: wireless mobile computing and pen-based man-machine interfaces.

It became famous thanks to the spectacular evidence for the ritual collection of stillicide waters discovered in the Lower Chamber. Recent excavations in the Upper Chamber have uncovered traces of both habitation and ritual deposition of human bone dating to three or more phases of the Neolithic, implying an occupational use of the cave in addition to its function as cemetery. A micromorphological sampling program was implemented to reinvestigate the stratigraphic succession of the Upper Chamber of the cave, where most of the cave's human use took place and where all systematic excavations have been conducted. The micromorphological evidence and new absolute dates attest use of the cave for stabling activity in the first half of the sixth millennium BC, corroborating the human-goat/sheep cohabitation, while also confirming the ongoing use of the cave for non-funerary purposes throughout the middle Neolithic. Finally, the contextual and spatial analyses of the sediment helped in reconstruction of the site's structure.

Th... more Tana di Badalucco cave is located in Imperia (Liguria, Italy), not far from the French border. This site is scarcely known and it has never been studied accurately, even though different archaeological excavations have returned really important elements, both in the archaeological and the paleoenvironmental aspects. Its stratigraphy ranges from Middle Paleolithic to Metal Ages, thus it has registered important climate and environmental variations specific to the Upper Pleistocene and Holocene. From 2012, the Soprintendenza Archeologia della Liguria, the Museo di Archeologia Ligure, and DiSTAV (University of Genova) have been collaborating in order to finally study this promising and complex stratigraphy, trying to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental context of the region. In this work, we present what we were able to assess thanks to the use of micromorphology, the study of undisturbed thin soil sections. This technique has proven useful in recognizing the alternating of cold and war...
