Considerable support exists for teachers writing in the classroom and modeling, brainstorming and... more Considerable support exists for teachers writing in the classroom and modeling, brainstorming and composing to assist their students in learning how more skilled writers approach writing tasks. Stories written by teachers and students can be used to teach English syntax, cross-cultural differences and literary appreciation. A story grammar of problem-resolution, as well as graphic organizers and listening-summarizing techniques, can assist students learning how to write fi ction. Two sample lessons are outlined. The fi rst lesson explains how to use a memoir to teach traditional literary terms such as theme, irony and confl ict, in addition to points of grammar such as modal auxiliaries, the present perfect and contractions. In the second lesson, suggestions are made for contextualizing a story for students through the use of comtemporary issues and timing the delivery of stories with the anniversaries of signifi cant historical events. Japanese universities are increasing their course offerings through English-medium instruction (E... more Japanese universities are increasing their course offerings through English-medium instruction (EMI) and even full-degree English-taught programs (ETP), but language proficiency and the integration of language support courses and EMI classes remain challenges. English for academic purposes (EAP) courses might be used as a bridge to EMI coursework just as they assist international students coming to study in the UK. Researching Extensive Reading and an Online Library

This action research project evaluated an integrated skills approach to ER through in-class readi... more This action research project evaluated an integrated skills approach to ER through in-class reading and discussion and utilizing an online library of graded readers. In addition to class time consisting of 15 minutes of silent reading, then 15 minutes for book talks, students were assigned reading for homework. Eighty-two sophomore students in five classes who accessed the library over a 12-week period were compared to 104 students in six classes serving as a control. Pretest and posttest measures indicated a statistically significant difference in vocabulary growth for the experimental group. An end-of-term survey indicated student preference for paperbacks over digital books, but nearly half found it easier to find books in the digital library than in a physical one. In addition, 59% felt that the digital library improved their English skills. After making classroom observations and creating summaries, teachers expressed optimism for this approach to ER.

Using Literature for Language Teaching in ESOL

In English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), there is renewed interest in use of literature... more In English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), there is renewed interest in use of literature in the communicative classroom. Literature may be part of a communicative pedagogy in three ways: (1) by providing a context in which to develop students' reading strategies and knowledge of non-fiction and literary texts; (2) by being the basis of an extensive reading program, with attendant acquisition of new vocabulary and grammatical forms; and (3) by offering the opportunity to explore cross-cultural values. One reading strategy found useful for encouraging reading is the exploration of story grammar, which provides common terms of reference and a direction for group discussion. As students learn about story grammar and understand how to apply it to stories they are reading, an extensive reading program should be undertaken, with students selecting their own reading materials from a classroom shelf or from a self-access area in the library. Use of a table of specifications for planning language tests, procedures for obtaining greater interand intra-rater reliability on composition tests are noted. This view has been superseded for the most part by a mode of inst.ruction whereby teachers assist students in developing planning and revising skills, with less emphasis on grammatical rules. Similar trends are evident in second language instruction, where brainstorming, word mapping, journal writing, sentence combining, and peer evaluation activities are being used to help students develop planning and revising skills in the target language.
