It means that frequently the disaster management has to deal with Cultural Heritage problems, such as preservation, safeguard, reconstruction, etc. Preserving Cultural Heritage for future generations is a duty; the importance of this task is proved by the attention which important international organizations have towards it (UNESCO, ICOMOS, CIPA).

Report generation from coverages around points of interest (POIs) or in areas of interest (AOIs) ... more Report generation from coverages around points of interest (POIs) or in areas of interest (AOIs) is a common need in thematic research projects. The extracted information adds value to the POIs or AOIs dataset by enriching its information content. In a common scenario, POIs or AOIs are usually vector data whereas background thematic datasets are often raster data. The paper investigates different approaches for zonal statistic computation about both raster and vector data with particular focus on server-side free and open source software (FOSS)-based solutions. Extensive performance tests are based on PostGIS (the spatial extension of popular PostgreSQL (http://www.postgresql.org/) FOSS DBMS) 2.0. This version is the first to offer raster support. Previously, vector-raster analysis was not supported by any FOSS DBMS environment and such analyses were possible in a FOSS server-side environment using geographical information system (GIS) tools (e.g., Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS) GIS) and Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Processing Server. PostGIS performance data from the tests are compared to an almost standard ESRI ArcGIS desktop approach. A project aimed at monitoring fire alerts in African protected areas provides the benchmarking application. The computation of people living in the surroundings of POIs (alert points from Global Fire Information Management System) based on a world population density dataset (LandScan) is the benchmarking query. The impact of many parameters on performances is considered: the adopted tile size in the storing of the raster in the DBMS, the dimension of queried areas in relation to the abovementioned tile size, the number of queried features.

Open-Source System for Spatial and Temporal Data Management the Botanical Census of the Royal Racconigi Park Study Case

The town of Racconigi is located in the north west of Italy, about thirty kilometers south of Tur... more The town of Racconigi is located in the north west of Italy, about thirty kilometers south of Turin. The Royal Park and Castle are part of the so-called system of "corone di delizie" (crowns of delights), a group of royal residences that surrounds Turin, the former capital city of the first Savoy Kingdom and later Italy. These residences have recently been included in the world heritage list by UNESCO (1997); in recent times the site has become a remarkable centre of cultural activities and events. The Park is rich in wildlife and lush vegetation, and, starting from the beginning of the twentieth century, it was left to run wild, because of high maintenance costs. Therefore, to face an overall decay, which became more significant after the Second World War, extensive recovery and restoration projects were required to bring the Park back to its original glory. The Architecture and Landscape Safeguard Office in Piedmont, which manages the site, started an important restoration project: the first phase consisted in the collection of reliable geometric knowledge, which was lacking, therefore the DITAG Geomatics research Group at the Politecnico di Torino was involved in creating a stable Reference Network and updated cartographic supports. The hydraulic system in the park has been completely replanned and restored over the last three years. Now attention is focused on the rich botanical property of the Royal Park, which is 170 hectares wide (about 430 acres), with an 18 hectare lake (about 45 acres) and about 25 Km of paths. A group of botanists carried out a complete census of the trees approximately twenty years ago, with the goal of preparing a botanical classification of the species and of examining their state of health. All the data was collected in a paper archive and their position mapped on a paper support; the survey output is now difficult to access or manage, and it needs to be updated. For a modern management of the site, all the data needs to be translated into a digital format. An appropriate information system is of primary importance. As the park is going to be opened to the public, it is so important to identify dangerous situations in order to guarantee the safety of the visitors. The system has to collect all available site data (historic plans, archive resources, specialists census, topographic surveys…), in order to have a complete overview of the situation; the system has to help in the ordinary maintenance operations of the trees (e.g. pruning, planting and the felling of the trees), and to keep the database updated, recording changes and variations. To guarantee these operations a support management system which is based on a web architecture in order to offer flexible usage, both in the data collection phase and in the system fruition has been created. An appropriate data structure was considered in a GIS environment, aimed at collecting the survey data, storing the historical information from previous sources and making the link to its position evident. The system is completely based on Open Source tools, in order to build a flexible and scalable architecture. This choice is also in tune with the policy of the Safeguard Office, which has the aim of developing a set of Open solutions that can be used to replicate in all the properties it manages. This database stores multi-temporal spatial data and its structure is described in the paper.

The integration of DDSM geometric data (e.g. point clouds acquired using a laser scanner) with im... more The integration of DDSM geometric data (e.g. point clouds acquired using a laser scanner) with image radiometric data offers a set of new surveying products: e.g. the Solid Image and the True Orthophoto. A new innovative concept, born from the integration of a DDSM with high quality digital images, recently developed at the Politecnico di Torino, is the Solid True Orthophoto. The Solid True OrthoPhoto (STOP) can be used in many surveying applications to determine, in real time, the position of any point in a 3D reference system, using a normal PC or to carry out correct three-dimensional measurements (lines, areas, volumes, angles, ...), by just selecting some points on the image. In addition, with the Solid Image, even unskilled users can easily plot profiles, sections and plans using simple drawing functions, and can generate stereo models and realistic 3D models. Questo sito si rivela interessantissimo, non solo per il ruolo di primo piano avuto nel medioevo, ma anche per la mancanza di massicci rimaneggiamenti nei secoli. Un'analisi archeologica delle strutture murarie del castello potrebbe dare importanti risultati, non solo per la ricerca archeologica, ma anche per la valorizzazione turistica del sito. Il rilevamento dei beni culturali, finalizzato ad un'analisi dimensionale e stratigrafica dell'oggetto, è oggi in grado di ottenere notevoli vantaggi dalla ricostruzione di modelli 3D degli oggetti stessi e dalla creazione di ortofoto. All'interno del progetto europeo INTERREG IIIB "Vie Romane nel Mediterraneo", Coordinato dal Dipartimento Soprintendenza per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, Direzione Beni Archeologici e Paesaggistici della Regione Autonoma Valle d'Aosta, sono state applicate differenti metodologie di rilevamento di una parte del castello, considerata di particolare interesse dal punto di vista dell'analisi archeologica delle murature.

The Castle and the surrounding Park are part of the circuit around Turin called the “corona di delizie” system, a grove of extra urban residences, with which the Savoia family encircled the capital during the time of their reign in the XVII and XVIII centuries. The site is of extreme historical, architectural and environmental value. In fact, since 1999, this site is considered part of UNESCO cultural heritage list. Recently, renovations were initiated on the Park’s hydraulic system. During the renovation phase, the Politecnico di Torino was requested to develop a GIS project for the hydraulic system. The present work describes a survey of this historic object. This work is a part of a wider project on the study of Architectural Patrimony carried out for the La Soprintendenza per il Patrimonio storico, artistico ed etnoantropologico per il Piemonte. It is a chance to test the modern survey techniques of photogrammetry and LIDAR. This article focuses on the integrated use of digital photogrammetry and LIDAR in a demanding environment, in order to take best advantages of both techniques. Different survey products were obtained, ranging from 3D and photogrammetric models to orthophotos. The adopted techniques, the problems and difficulties that arose during the survey process are shown in the paper.
